I had scars extending out too, as well as a very fine scarline in the lower eyelid and also on the inner crease of the upper eyelid that ends in a tiny bump where the suture ended, after my bilateral upper and lower blepharoplasty. Here is my personal anti scar arsenal that I began as soon as the sutures were out and wound completely closed: 1. Used Biocorneum every single day during the day whether I'm inside or outdoors. 2. Used Scar Away Silicon strips every night. Also on the weekends day and night. - They flatten out the scars and reduce the redness significantly, but must be repeated until the scar 'remembers' to stay flat - that takes as long as it takes. Used them religiously for 4 mos, then less in mo 5 and 6. 3.Got an IPL Fotofacial to lighten the darkened areas of skin near the eyes. Make sure they use a sheild - mine did - fantastic results. This also flattens out the scars. Scars will lighten and become finer over time, blending in. Being proactive in my own treatment with the guidance and approval of my p.s. has helped the scars tremendously. A different P.S. advised me to wait and that revisions are not advisable unitl one year post op (I have a slightly widened scar and tiny bump at the very end and edge of my eye lid too, that I am unhappy about) - again, the silicon strips really help to flatten them out. I was told the scars will get better but never go away entirely. It's important to get them flat and fine, so makeup doesn't highlight the scars, as well as looking natural when you dont wear makeup. I wish I knew about this before hand - they downplay that part before surgery and I had a highly credentialed, well known, very expensive p.s.
Ulthera - I had it and the results were great. It hurts like hell though, so be sure to get prescription pain meds.to take before. You'll need someone to drive you to your appointment and pick you up.
I think facial plastic surgeons in particular should be up to date and intensely well informed on anything that affects their specialty. We pay them for their education, skill, time, expertise, information, artistry and support staff. Its not easy to find a great doctor and you really don't know how good your plasic surgeon is until you have your results. There are still many out there who are not as informed as they should be and are arrogant enough to pass judgement like the one who said that facial exercises are for crazy people - not true. Clearly, that doctor doesn't know about the great results that some people have and should have said that he/she didn't know. Passing judgement like that is not ok and you should run the other way! There are so many techniques, methods and technology. Promise yourself you will take your time, write down your questions, do your research and consult with at least 3 doctors or more. Now I realize I should have done more.
Had my uppers and lowers done 8 wks ago. At 2 wks post op - the scars are scary and depressing! No one told me how bad it could be - only how great. At 2wks, regret and sadness set in - feeling like I traded one problem for other, even worse problems. Once my incisions healed completely and I had my doctors permission, I used Biocorneum - a silicone product with sunscreen especially for this. Research strongly supports silicone and sunscreen is even more important. Keep those scars away from the sun's rays - even at your office window.
I am a very proactive, research oriented person and going to do all I can to get a PERFECTLY NATURAL result! Some doctors recommend slight, gentle massage and facial expression exercises to soften and flatten the scar tissue. That makes sense. The slightest bits of improvement make a very big difference when it comes to the eyes. At 8 weeks, I can say for the very first time, that I am getting much more HAPPY about my eyes! For the first time, I’m not feeling that sense of earlier regret. I know the final result can't be judged for 6mos to a year, but I'm finally getting there. So hang in there. RealSelf has been the best, most helpful board on this subject barr none! I google every question - no matter how unique it may be.
