I had braces 12 years ago and the ones used on my top arch were clear, not metal. The only thing that was made of metal was the super thin wire that went through the middle of the braces brackets. I had to have metal braces on my bottom arch because I had an overbite, and the clear braces were more fragile than the metal ones. If I recall correctly the clear braces are made of cement. They didn't stain or discolor during treatment, but the bands that went around the brackets would discolor or stain if I drank or ate dark colored stuff like pop or tea.
