  • Posted to Can anyone advise me about what to look for and what to expect after I return home form my DIEP flap reconstruction? on 23 Jun 2012

    Hello Everyone,
I wanted to thank all of those who were thinking of me as I waited for the results of my biopsy on the opposite breast. Thankfully it was 100% benign. The micro calcifications were located in a small area of fat necrosis. The fat necrosis was secondary to the reduction in the right breast in preparation for my diep flap which was done in Jan 2012. I had my revision of the flap and abdominal incision on Wednesday, June 20. Surgery went well. My PS is very pleased with the results. It was a day surgery procedure, unfortunately my body had other ideas and revolted in a big way. I was re-admitted to the hospital Thursday morning with a very low B/P 70/30 and uncontrolled vomiting. I was discharged today (Saturday) and feel 100% better. Took over 2 days to get my B/P above 100 systolic. I had all a full medical work-up to see if they could figure out why I dropped my B/P after anesthesia. No real answer was given. One more fact to make sure all my medical team is aware of. No more day surgeries for me!
I am very happy with the revision so soon after surgery. Hoping I will be able to get the nipple a little further down the road.
Thank you again for your support.

Thanks Beverly. I've got all those bases covered. Good Diet, plenty of exercise. In fact been feeling better than I have in some time. That's what makes this new journey a little bit harder to take. I have a very supportive family and fantastic friends, including those on this forum. I've made peace with whatever decision I have to make. I am prepared for the worst, but hoping for the best. Beverly you are absolutely right! It is a very early catch. I'll keep you posted.

    Hi All,
The revision of my DIEP flap is scheduled for June 20. I am pleased with the plan my surgeon and I have in place. I was finally taking a long sigh, thinking my recovery/ reconstruction phase will soon all be over.
Unfortunately, it is looking like that won't be the case. I may be facing doing the whole cancer battle again. I had my "routine" diagnostic mammogram yesterday on the remaining breast. New cluster of pleomorphic micro calcifications found. Radiologist reviewed previous mammography with me. The cluster was not there on my last mammogram, less than 1 year ago. This is the same scenario I faced 2 years ago with the diagnosis of DCIS, Stage 0, ER+ on the left. I have the stereotactic biopsy scheduled for Thursday, June 14 and will have results Monday, June 18. Keep me in your prayers. Having been down this road only makes it marginally better. Just have to get through the next 2 weeks!

    Hi Whoever0730,
Thanks for the suggestion re: hyperbaric therapy. My incisions have actually closed now. Still very red and fragile, but much better than before. I will have to have scar revision as well as reduction of the flap at some point. I will keep your suggestion in mind and discuss it with my PS. I certainly don't want to have a revision of the revision! Glad to hear your wounds closed.

    Hi Beverly,
Thank you. I know you are right about easy does it and the guilt re:work. I am glad you are doing so well. It gives me hope for the coming months. I'll work on reseting my expectations. I agree we can sometimes be our own worst enemy. Thanks for the advice and encouragement.
