The amount of pain someone experiences during the application process depends on the size and texture of the needles, the application method and the area being treated. The most sensitive area is definitely the lips with eyelids coming in second. Brows usually tend not to hurt very much, because the skin is thicker and less innervated. Machine applications are usually more painful that hand tool applications. Thinner-gauge, polished needles cause the least amount of discomfort. Most technicians use a topical numbing medication before starting. The longer this medication stays on prior to starting, the more comfortable the process will be. Be sure to tell your technician if you have had previous allergic reactions to topical anesthetics like Lidocaine.

Permanent make up tends look artificial when the pigment colors are harsh and the application is too deep. Applying color more superficially with a light touch tends to look more natural. If you're planning to do eyebrows, don't wax or shave off all your natural brow hair. The permanent color should be hidden within the natural brow hair. Removing too many brow hairs will lead to a very "painted-on" look. If you have no brow hair at all, ask the technician to fill in the eyebrow area with individual hairstrokes rather than a solid line.

Permanent makeup can sometimes be removed by laser, however it may take several sessions and there are no guarantees. Eyeliner is more difficult to remove than brows or lips. The safest bet when choosing to commit to something permanent is to start out with a light, natural look. You can always add more color, but removing it is difficult. Stay away from pure black pigment in large quantities as it can sometimes discolor over time. Brown colors are a better choice, even for those with deeper hair and skin tones. Experienced, board-certified technicians can be found through the American Academy of Micropigmentation.  Always ask to see before-and-after photos and ask how much experience the technician has.

The cost of permanent makeup procedures varies quite a bit. Sometimes the machine method is less expensive, because it is faster and may not require a follow-up appointment. Permanent makeup applied with a "hand tool" is sometimes more expensive and may be more likely to need a touch-up appointment soon after the first treatment. Prices for eyebrows can range from around $200 to $1,200, depending on the area of the country, the technique used and the experience of the professional.
