So good to hear you are doing well nikisc. I was too before this latest saga. Any dental issues I've had in the past have been easily identified and corrected. My primary care dentist didn't do anything wrong. He used a filler that had been approved and probably hadn't heard of any problems associated with it. He referred me to an endodontist from another state who'd recently started practicing in our area. He was the one who didn't listen to me or to my dentist, who had told him to look at that upper tooth. The other dentists were wise to send me to the last specialist because the procedure was pretty involved and could have easily cracked the tooth. I plan on telling my dentist about the endodontist he referred me to, and I also plan on informing the first endodontist what a HUGE mistake he made.
Someone told me that the Thermaguard he used to fill the old root canal is the same kind of product they use use to fill lines in the face, like Juvederm. Does anyone know anything about that?
I actually slept well last night and do not have the shooting pain in that back tooth this rnornihg. It's possible that trauma caused me to clench my jaw while I was sleeping and made it tender. I may be healing and my mouth relaxing. Now it will be interesting to see what happens as my body adjusts to no pain meds. The withdrawal symptoms (even after normal usage) are anxiety, depression, insomnia and fatigue. H- mmm. Sound familiar? ; )
I am keeping positive thoughts that the worst is over. And it's good go see that someone is doing well just 14 weeks out.
Hi all. I haven't posted in awhile. Have had a lot going on. This is going to be long because I need to vent. Really rough the last three weeks. No, it's been a nightmare. I hate posting without encouragement but maybe, hopefully, this particular chapter in my Botox story will help someone in some way.
July 11th I went in for a crown. No root canal, just to replace a large filling. I was feeling okay at that point, mild depression and nausea most days with an occasional bad day. The dental procedure went fine but by the following evening I was having incredible pain on another tooth above the crown. I had some significant commitments that could not be re-scheduled the next couple of days so could not get back in to my dentist until the 18th. I took multiple ibuprofen to get through. When I got back in he took an x-ray and noted that the tooth was one he'd done a root canal on 3 years ago, so I should not have been experiencing pain. This tooth has a crown on it as well. He thought maybe it had cracked under the crown so gave me some shots in my gums, a prescription for pain pills, and referred me to an endodontist to handle it. The shots did absolutely nothing for the pain.
The specialist got me in two days later. By this time my right eye and cheek were terribly swollen, my eye almost completely shut. He took his own x-ray and didn't see a crack so started the tooth tapping/cold sensitivity testing on all the teeth on that side. I was in so much pain nothing he did made me feel any worse. He was frustrated and surmised that the pain was probably coming from under the new crown on the bottom back. (Note: swelling in cheek and eye almost always indicate an upper tooth.) He scheduled me for the next day.
I went in for the root canal on the 21st, on the most recently crowned tooth. It didn't make sense to me because my dentist is really good, had taken x-rays, and would never put a crown over an infected tooth. But I was desperate for relief and trusted this highly educated specialist. Why shouldn't I? He performed the R.C. and sent me home with an antibiotic. That night I was out of my mind with pain. At this point I'm thinking I may have a sinus infection, although I've had a few and had never had this kind of experience. But I decided to give the antibiotics a chance to work. No sleep, not eating.
In the meantime I looked in my mouth at where he'd done the R.C. I was stunned. He'd done it on a tooth that was not even in question. I looked at my dental statements. Crown had been placed on #31. Majority of pain in #3 - the tooth my dentist had told him to look at. He did the R.C. on #30!! So I didn't know what to do. I could barely think straight.
I finally went to my MD to either rule out or confirm a sinus infection on the 26th. He said I definitely had infection and did an ultrasound. It was not coming from my sinuses but had inflammation in my ear and throat and obviously it was spreading from somewhere because my face was still swollen. He gave me more potent antibiotics and told me to call my dentist. I had major trust issues and I'm pretty sure all of this exacerbated the Botox symptoms. Just hard at that moment to see past the pain.
I'm conservative and thought I'd give the new antibiotics a chance. Two days later I was sobbing and just pacing and throwing up. My stomach was a mess from the new antibiotics, pain pills and ibuprofen, which were doing nothing. A friend who'd kind of been informed stopped over. She got me into her dental office, four dentists in that practice looked at tooth #3 and immediately saw the pocket of infection over the root. They were puzzled as to why a tooth that already had what looked to be a good root canal would be infected. They also couldn't figure out why I had pain in other places. Except the owner of the practice said there may be a problem under the new crown. (They'd put me through all the testing plus more again.) So, they sent me out with another prescription for a stronger pain pill and a referral to a highly respected dental diagnostician and professor at the dental college.
This past Tues., the 2nd, I went in to the second specialist. He took one look at the x-ray, saw the infection, but again thought it looked like a good R.C. so said he'd need go in and see. As soon as he opened the tooth up he realized that my dentist had used a canal filler called Thermaguard that had been approved a few years back. They had quit using it at the dental school because it has a tendency to shrink. It's a more pliable filler that makes it easier to pack into canals that have hooks at the top, which mine did. He decided to redo all the canals in that tooth. I had my mouth open for almost three hoursv he had two dental students observing and I had the definite impression this guy new what he was doing. He cleaned out the canals, drained the infection, shot canals with iodine and filled them back up. He said I would be in a lot of pain for a couple of days but that I could stop taking the last antibiotic, which was convenient since I hadn't been able to keep it down anyway.
That night my face felt like it was on fire. I couldn't sleep on either side, only sitting up. The thudding pain in the upper #3 is better, just feels bruised. But last night when I put my right cheek on the pillow, pain flew through my face like an electric bolt. My jaw hinge to my chin were burning. Could not get relief lying on the other side. Had to sit up. I still have pain pills but have been trying to get by on ibuprofen. I've only taken prescription pain pills a handful of times in my life. Usually end up throwing away most of the pills. I've been on antibiotics maybe 4-5 times. Today the pain is tolerable and I'm trying to be patient and give the last procedure time to heal. I'm suppose to go back to this last specialist in three weeks so he can check the tooth and seal it.
I have never been through anything like this. I cannot help but think the over-the-top symptoms have been magnified because of the Botox. When you have a root canal, or even a big filling, or crown or anything that is not compatible with the body, it sets up an interference field, blocking or altering the energy meridian passing through it. It will affect different parts along that meridian, different organ systems in the body. And usually will cause it to have a problem as well. I have not been to my acupuncturist since all of the tooth thing started but want to go tomorrow to see if I can get some relief and answers.
Anxiety has not been a significant problem for me since the first week after I received Botox. But today it's been terrible. Being blindsided by pain, not sleeping and the stomach issues have caused me to get off track with all of the remedies that have been so helpful in getting me well. I am still not out of the woods and by the sharp twinges I'm getting on the bottom tooth I may be getting another root canal.
If anyone out there is considering dental work please be careful. I know when there is an abscess it is horrible and needs to be dealt with. I'm not even sure what to advise. If the dental work can be put off, I sure would.
I'm sorry this is so lengthy.
I'm at exactly 14 weeks today.
You are all always in my thoughts and prayers. When I get through this I am going to make it part of my life's work to get the Botox side effects message out there.
Lily have you noticed something parculiar about the forum you first found me on? I just re-visited and there were about 33 pages of advertising posts in front of my post. It's as if someone has tried to sabotage the forum. Same username in all of the posts from what I could tell.
