Zoom is No Better (Or Worse) Than At-home Kits

Not Worth It
Spent: $1,200 in Atlanta, GA

I had Zoom teeth whitening at my dentist’s office. My husband was receiving an award from the college where he’s tenured – it was a black tie affair and I wanted to look good for it.

First of all you won’t believe the prep for this procedure. I had images of the home whitening kits and strips you see on TV; being sat in the dentist chair with peroxide in my mouth for over an hour was a different experience entirely. It wasn’t simple and it wasn’t easy but the results seemed very similar. I even went home with instructions to “follow-up” with an at-home kit. Why would I need to do that after what I’d just gone through?!

My teeth were very sensitive during the procedure. I wouldn’t say it hurt exactly but it was certainly not comfortable. I couldn’t wait to get out of that office.

My teeth were sensitive to hot and cold for a few days afterwards, something I was never warned about and that haunted me at the awards dinner.

Am I happy with the effects? Sure, I suppose it is better than I was. But I don’t think this is any more or less effective than other products out there; I can see a difference in shades but I still wouldn’t call my teeth “white” (I am a religious coffee drinker so maybe “white” doesn’t exist for me anymore). For the hassle and expense though I wouldn’t say it was worth it at all.

Both the Zoom and bleaching trays with Opalescence are offered at our office. I would choose the Opalescence. It is more gentle and works well. I can get a deal on the product since I work in the office. Ebay sellers sell it cheap. I don't know how they do it. I see it being sold for less than the wholesale price at our office.

Thats because there is only one or two tooth whitening suppliers out there that are still loyal to the dentists. Most sell large bulk orders of 100, 200 (or more) kits per order and give super big deals to these people selling online.

Margie, I noticed there are some different strengths on the Opalescence. Which strength do you recommend?

I use the 35% as you only have to leave the trays in for 30 mins instead of overnight like with the lower percentages (10% & 15%).  You could also use the 20% for an hour, but why bother when you can get it done in half the time? :)  I too recommend Ebay for Opalescence, I only get mine online, as dentists can rip you off on the price.

Maraa from GA,

As you are a 'religious' coffee drinker, then I presume you didn't abstain from coffee for 2 weeks after the treatment...? Also I was told not to drink red wine or anything dark and staining. You totally wasted your money if you continued to drink coffee for the weeks afterwards, your Dentist should have told you that !
