6 Months Update

These pictures were taken at 6 months post-op. I really love my new nose! My doctor says I still have about 15% swelling left in the tip, so it will get even smaller. I have received many compliments on my appearance since having it done, but no one has been able to specify what is different.

2 Months Post-Op

These photos were taken in mid-July. The swelling was still present here, as the tip of my nose was still very stiff. My tip just recently softened up in late August. I will upload some more recent photos soon. I'm very happy with it!

Surgery through Week 1

My surgery was scheduled for 8 AM, and once I arrived I filled out a bit of paperwork and took some medication that the nurse handed me. I changed into a gown and then went right into the operating room. The two nurses got me settled in, hooked up my IV, and chatted with me. My surgery was under twilight anesthesia, and I was concerned that I would be aware during the procedure. They said that I wouldn't be and that patients forget afterwards if they are aware. After about ten minutes of the sedative being administered by IV, my surgeon then came in and swabbed by nose with numbing gel and gave me lidocaine injections through my mouth, like they do at the dentist. After a few minutes, he just got down to business and started the procedure. I was in fact awake the entire time, and I watched cross-eyed as he operated. It actually was entertaining and it didn't hurt at all. It was pretty much just like having a filling done. I remember the whole procedure but it was fine, and I would do it again. They were all surprised that I was still awake, and I was told the amount of sedative that I was given knocked 200lb men out, but I was awake and asking questions while he operated. I don't write this to frighten anyone away from twilight anesthesia- I would actually recommend it because I felt fine and was ready to get up and go home the minute it was over.

The procedure took about two hours. It turns out my septum was more deviated than even expected and I have to have osteomies and grafts to fill in a dent in the side of my nose. Once he was done, I was held for about half an hour while being given fluids by IV, and then I was free to go. I was starving at this point and had my mom immediately take me to McDonald's, and then I slept during the 1.5 hour drive home. In the car I kept trying to breath through my nose and I would startle myself awake.

Once we got home, I settled into a recliner and slept for most of the day. I had to change my drip pad quite often during the first day, and I had a pretty bad headache for a couple of days afterward. I have to say that I looked awful for about 4 days. My face swells up easily with any dental work (it happened when I had my wisdom teeth out) and I looked like Shrek for a while. My nose also looked very upturned and piggy, but I told myself that was just from the taping and swelling and remained calm. I had two black eyes, and the bruising was completely gone after 5 days. I had a large amount of welling in my cheeks that gradually moved down my face until I had jowls. I couldn't lift my top lip to smile, and the whole upper lip region was swollen and stiff. Needless to say, I didn't leave the house for a week.

Sleeping was the worst part of the whole process for me. I kept trying to breath through my nose and I would wake up gasping. I also have a hard time sleeping on my back with two pillows- I'm a side sleeper.

One week later, I had the cast removed and the swelling seemed pretty minimal to me compared to other people's pictures.
