In February 2013, at age 51, I was diagnosed with cancer in my right breast. Because of having a 30% higher risk of getting cancer in the other breast, I opted to have a double mastectomy. After meeting with an oncologist and general surgeon, I had my first meeting with Dr. Schwartz. He patiently explained the pros and cons with the various procedures that were available for reconstructive purposes. At that time gummy bear implants were not on the market and round silicon implants were used in June of that year after undergoing three months of skin expansion. The new breasts looked good and I was equally impressed that I did not have to wear a bra, as the “girls” were very perky. Unfortunately follow-up exams earlier this year showed that I was developing capsular contracture, a condition where scar tissue builds up around the implant pressing on it causing pain and gradual distortion. In April 2015 the first set of implants were taken out, scar tissue removed and gummy bear implants were inserted. I am very pleased with the new implants as they have a more natural appearance. There are some areas on the breasts where the skin is thin and the next step is to do fat grafting to improve the look. I am hoping to undergo this procedure at the end of this year with Dr. Schwartz.

During this whole process Dr. Schwartz and his staff have been wonderful. Questions are always answered and calls are returned. Dr. Schwartz keeps abreast (no pun intended) of the newest research, technologies and procedures, which as a patient is very reassuring. I have appreciated the empathy directed my way as well as everyone putting up with my, sometimes, warped sense of humor.

I would highly recommend Dr. Schwartz for breast reconstruction procedures.
