At 24 years old I had a cyst in my right breast. Of course we didn't know that because the tests and equipment was not what it is now. I was only given the option of surgery and I had to agree to a RADICAL MASTECTOMY. When I woke up I did discover that is still had my breast. And while the outcome was wonderful, it took me several years to get over it. Fast forward 20 years. The regular checkup revealed a very small tumor. The radiology report indicated surgery not necessary. But I had a very wise older doctor that felt it was worth going after. It was cancer--- in the left breast. I had a lumpectomy and 6 weeks of radiation. Ha---I still had my breast. About a tablespoon was removed and I was pronounced cured. Fast forward ANOTHER 20 years. Today I am undergoing reconstruction from a bilateral mastectomy. Cancer returned in the left breast and we decided to remove the right breast as well. Later tests did show that there were cancer cells in that breast, too. I was FURIOUS! It was back and this time it took my breasts. Then I met Dr. Soler and we had a very frank discussion about some problems that might come up. I was 63 (64 now), an ex-smoker, overweight and the left breast had had radiation. Don't ask me why but I was/am determined to have my "breasts" back. Dr. Soler reassured me that he had ways to overcome the situations we discussed. After a failed try and a "clean-up", the expander in the left breast had to be removed. Then came my latest procedure, an LD flap. The surgery is no cake walk but it has been a success! Now we are filling the expanders and with every visit, I'm more and more tickled with the progress. We still have the last step, putting the "implant" in. Soon I will order the tee shirt I've been looking at for several months. It says, "Why yes they're FAKE the REAL ones tried to KILL me"! All kidding aside, reconstruction may not be for everyone. It was right for me. I want to win this 40 year battle. And it's looking good!
