17 years ago, at age 30, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I opted to have a bilateral mastectomy. Dr. K was my plastic surgeon. At the time of the mastectomy, tissue expanders were placed under the chest muscle. Over the next 6 months, the expanders were filled to create room for the saline implants. Dr. K understood my concerns of wanting to look natural and not too big. Dr. K later made nipples from my existing skin and then they were tattooed.

Most insurance cover the cost of reconstructive breast surgery. Difficult to estimate a dollar amount.

Dear Allison,

17 years ago, congratulations! The procedure sounds very similar to what one would experience today. Your surgeon was certainly on the cutting edge, pun intended.

How did you go about choosing your fabulous surgeon? Many women find they need some guidance on making that decision.

So glad you are well and look forward to hearing from you here.

Stay well,

Beverly
