Nearing the month mark...

Hello ~ tomorrow will be one month since I had BR surgery. I can report that this week (week 4) I have felt a distinct shift towards getting back to feeling normal. My pain is less - I am still taking 1 - 2 rx pain meds a day (morning is for acute lower back pain from sleeping on back, evening pain is due to stitches / swelling / soreness). But I am determined to wean off this week and go solely with OTC pain meds. Tired of feeling tired and fuzzy. :)

My energy is better, and the breasts are definitely looking good. The shape has rounded out and the stitches look great. I do have redness on the lower half of the left breast, but the PS felt it was bruising and nothing more serious. I have a follow up visit during week 6.

I am sleeping better - usually through the night. If I wake up, I tend to walk around the house a few laps to relieve my sore back. I'm SO LOOKING FORWARD to when I can go braless for a while!!! Wearing these things 24/7 is incredibly taxing. I ordered two Valmont sports bras (was surprised that the B/C cup fit! yay!) and they have been reasonably comfortable. In general, I have found that my skin post-op has become incredibly sensitive to any materials. I can't stand anything not entirely soft.

I still have torso bloating that started in week 2. I am hoping it will fade and is not the result of being sedentary for the last month. I'm eager to get back to some regular physical activity.

So, it continues to be a longer recovery road than I expected, but it's been a good lesson in patience!

17 day post op visit

Hello! I just had my 2nd post-op visit. The PS says all looks good. She removed the remaining glue and sniped a few remaining stitches. Surprisingly, I had no pain during these procedures. She advised me to use Neosporin on the incisions for 3-4 days, and then I can use the silicone tape.

In general, each day gets a little better. I've had a bit of pain increase the last few days; the right breast in particular feels heavy and full. To be honest, the most challenging recovery aspect is sleeping on my back (I wake up with WICKED low back pain) and wearing a bra 24/7.

Still having some mood swings; they hit hard and without notice. Like a passing spring storm - crashing thunder and lightening for a little while and then the storm passes and a little rainbow comes out. I'm also finding that sitting idle for several weeks is NOT my strong suit. I am trying to be more patient with myself and the recovery.

Regarding bras - I'm now using the Carefex Bella during the day and the Playtex® Women's Simply Sized Wirefree Bra from Target at night. Both are pretty comfortable (given the circumstances), provide enough support, and are reasonably priced. I have tried with no luck for a front-close sport bra.

After thinking about BR for at least 15 years, I...

After thinking about BR for at least 15 years, I finally did it!

I've suffered from backaches, neck aches, pinched nerves, and migraines for as long as I can remember. After having three friends go through the procedure in the last 5 years (all with very happy results) I got more serious about considering having the surgery myself.

Last Summer I suffered a painful and numbing pinched nerve in my left shoulder. After visits to a specialist, some PT, lots of rx and OTC meds, I began to wonder - was it the size of my breasts? I had been wearing a 38 DD for a while. I had heard that many women wear the wrong size to I trotted off to Nordstroms to have the girls properly measured. To my shock, I was a 36 DDDD! (side note: the woman who did the measuring at Nordstrom's was WONDERFUL - she was so helpful, enthusiastic, and patient. I will be going back once I am cleared to buy a 'real' bra again). Of course my options were limited to bras in the $70+ range. The fit was better, but the pain did not subside for months. Fast forward to this year and the pinched nerve returned.

I began my consideration of having a BR in earnest. I asked my orthopedic physician, my GP, my chiropractor, and my OB/GYN for their opinion. All gave a positive response and said that patients who had the procedure were universally happy, and the only regret they expressed was that they had waited so long to have to procedure done.

I did loads of research, here and elsewhere. I obtained several recommendations, and ultimately selected a PS who specialized in microsurgery of the breast. Upon meeting with her, she concluded that a BR was warranted and would very likely reduce my pain and discomfort.

My surgery was June 23rd. I had bilateral breast reduction (6oo grams from the left breast and 400 grams from the right). No complications, and thus far the incisions look to be healing very well. I love the new size (probably a D right now, as they are still swollen) and feel that my body is 'right'.

The recovery is significant - I really fooled myself thinking I would be down for a week or so, and then back to regular activities after the second week. Not the case! It's much slower and more intense. The PS also did some side lipo, which she did say would increase the discomfort and recovery time.

For anyone who is considering - or is in the process of recovery - I HIGHLY recommend "When Less Is More" by Bethanne Snodgrass M.D. This invaluable digital book on Amazon is packed full of tremendous information. The best 99 cents I have ever spent!!!

I will post more about the process and recovery soon. Thanks for reading my story!
