It's too new to rate my experience overall. A little pain these first few days, which I expected. No big deal. I'm lisping a little. I hope that gets better. And I feel like I have to spit constantly.

I just started wearing my first trays. The biggest annoyance for me so far is that i feel like I constantly need to spit. I don't think I can take 8 months of that. Has anyone else experienced this? will it get better? Also, my dentist told me I need to wear these 22 hours a day. Is that the standard? (I noticed the Invisalign site said 20-22). Is there any room for cheating a little? Also, and this is kind of embarrassing, but can you kiss someone with these in? :) thanks.

My Doctor:

I'm upset with my provider as she did not tell me that I would have to have the attachments or that my teeth would be shaved (in between). Also, during my consultation, I was told I would have to wear them 18 hours. AFTER I had paid and committed to the treatment and showed up to get my first trays I was told I'd have to wear them 22 hours. I'm very unhappy about that.

Welcome to the club, I think you will like the results (if not the process!). Excess salivation will go away, as will the feeling of something in your mouth for the most part. Also lisping when you talk for a few weeks is common. It is all about your tongue getting used to the "foreign body". I kept mine on about 20 hrs a day, but you will have to see how you do. If the next set are really tight, then you didn't wear the previous set long enough. And if you are really "bad" the next set won't fit at all you have to wear the current set longer and then you will fall behind in your schedule. So it is kind of trying to find out what is right for you trial and error. Dentist will say 24 hrs a day is optimum! I kissed with them in and it was not noticed by the other person...:). Buttons are no big deal, you only feel them when you have the aligners out. And shaving between teeth periodically is a breeze. Good luck!

what do you mean a breeze with the "teeth shaving"? I am kind of nervous about this in the sense I don't want it to look cosmetically odd. Why are the teeth shaved? They leave that part out on the invisalign site ;)

Don't be nervous! The "shaving" is just them filing a microscopic amount off the SIDE of a tooth, similar motion to flossing, with a slim flexible metal "saw". Does NOT touch gums. You cannot tell by looking at your teeth that it happened, you would need a magnifier. The dentist slides a spacer between teeth and if it doesn't go in, they know in order for a tooth movement to happen they need to "shave". I had it done many times.

It doesn't hurt but it isn't necessarily true that you cannot see it. They shaved between my two front teeth and I now have a space there (very visible) where I didn't have one before.

If I know I'm going out to a bar or for the night I will take my trays out. I cheat usually on the weekends. Kissing is fine, awkward at first. I just got rubber bands though and am terrified to kiss with those in.

Yes, you can kiss with the trays in. You will get used to them. I haven't spit on anyone since my first month. The shaving between the teeth is a bit uncomfortable, for me I needed three different times of shaving so that the crooked teeth could move into place. The first month or so is the hardest, once you get past that you will be fine. I rarely cheat, but sometimes I will go out to dinner without them on, but bring them with me and put them back on in the bathroom as soon as I am finished.
