Hello, bosom buddies! I’m sharing my story...

Hello, bosom buddies! I’m sharing my story because this forum has helped me (in more ways than one) in my decision to have this surgery.

The stats: 55 year old mother of three grown children, 5’3”, 130 pounds give or take a couple of pounds here and there ;). Bra size pre surgery was 34D/DD. Back pain, neck pain, bra marks on shoulders and under bra folds, breast sagging and hanging so desperately that if I don’t do anything about it they’d be hanging well below my waist in 10 years. I wore expensive minimizer bras of the same style because that was the only one that fit me well. Since I developed breasts at age 12 I was the butt of jokes of some people who called me names because of being large breasted. I was not even overweight, I was top heavy.

The surgeon: Dr. Kaczynski did my breast reduction surgery. I was his patient five years ago and he did really good on that surgery I was so pleased. I had always wanted and dreamt of, having proportionate breasts. I think one of the hallmarks of a good plastic surgeon is that patients trust him/her enough to come back and have another procedure done. So there I was talking to him about breast reduction. He said that this patient population is the happiest with the result, and I couldn’t agree more. He answered all my questions (I didn’t have much because I found a lot of information here on RS and did my own research on the side). I wanted a C cup or even B. He asked if I would be willing to trade off small breasts for surgical scars. That’s a small price to pay considering what I’d gone through with the D/DD cup.The surgery: Dr. K had asked me one last time the morning of surgery what size I wanted. Again, I said a C cup or maybe B but definitely smaller. I’m now 20 days post op. Dr. K removed my stitches and steristrips 10th post op day. I’m healing well, no problems. I tend to heal well and of good health (I have hypothyroidism but that is all…well I am also an over analytical worrier, if that counts). Second post op day Dr. removed the two drains. It was a same-day surgery so I went home that day. It was uneventful except that I hated the anesthesia effect but I drank a lot of water, I slept on and off all day on my recliner. I moved the recliner to my bedroom (thank you for this info, RS!). My two furbabies slept in my bed.

The healing process: I continue to read posts in this forum and I have the same fears, hopes, and expectations as most here. So in that way it’s good that I know I’m healing well; I do read the pamphlet information from Dr. K that guides the patient through the surgery process but I also enjoy reading stories here. The Q & A forum with the physicians is very informative and helpful.

What helped (not in order of importance):
- Gather as much information as you can regarding the procedure that you want.
- Be as healthy as possible. I think of this as going to a battle: you want to be armed well to combat anything deterrent to healing. I load up on protein which helps in healing, Vit B12 because I’m vegetarian. I also take probiotics, lots of fruits (I should be called a fruitarian) and liquids. Coconut water is a godsend to cover electrolytes and flush out anesthetics used.
- Follow physician’s instructions (I have OCD, self-diagnosed so I followed everything to the letter)
- Get support from family and friends, you’re gonna need them.
- I got my post op bras from Amazon. Bali Comfort Revolution, size 34 Small (yeay!) I got two of these (less than $20) and one Valmont zip front sports bra size 34B/C. I can’t tell you how happy I am fitting into these size small bras. I feel normal. Dr. said breasts still swollen at this point. By 3 to 6 months breasts will start settling in its natural form.
- Pain: only had pain the evening after surgery, so I took one tab of Lortab twice but otherwise surgical pain was tolerable. The antibiotic pill tasted and smelled gross. My breasts were just sore. I binge watched Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and 30 Rock in two weeks I was off work. Dr. K suggested one week with the kind of work I do but I wanted more recovery days.

Hope this helps. Happy healing.

Dr. Kaczynski performed my surgery and I am quite happy with the result so far. He has a lot of experience in breast reduction so I was quite comfortable choosing him for this procedure. I had planned this procedure a long time ago but I chickened out each time because I was scared of anesthesia and I mentioned this to him. Aware of my health condition/history he said "you'd be a dream to them (CRNA)", which certainly appeased me. He has excellent bedside manners and so does his staff. He is frank and honest with what he can and can't do. During the consult he said that breast reduction patients are his most satisfied and happiest patients and I couldn't agree more. The other day I ordered a small sized generic bra and from the looks of it I didn't think it would fit. I tried it on anyway and it fit like a glove! I almost cried.
