I had an ePrime skin rejuvenation procedure performed on my face on Tuesday. It was performed by the dermatologist specializing in laser procedures. The representative from Syneron was assisting during this procedure.

The dermatologist injected 4 shots of anesthesia and applied anesthesia cream on my skin before the procedure. When my skin became numb the doctor performed procedure with a minimally invasive aesthetic device. Right after the procedure my face began to swell but the doctor and representative stated it was normal. Within an hour my face became twice bigger in size, was covered in bright red dots and I was unable to open my mouth and eyes, especially on the right side of my face.

I called the doctor who assured me that it was normal and recommended to keep ice pack on my face. I followed the instructions. After one more hour I went to the Emergency Room at the hospital where I received shots of Benadryl, steroids, pain relive medication and IV. My face did not changed in shape it was still swollen. Next day I went to see my dermatologist who performed the procedure, she gave me another shot of steroid and prescribed prednisol.

At night my face was more swollen so I had to go to the Emergency Room, where I received Decadron, Benadryl and Pepcid injections. My face became a little bit less swollen. Next morning my face was twice bigger in shape, red, navy blue under eyes with wrinkles.

Horrible!! I went to my doctor who stated that it is normal and I just need to wait. My doctor prescribed me ranitidine and antibiotic – Azithromycin. Today is Saturday; my face is a complete mess: swollen, red, blue and yellow color, my neck and shoulders swollen. Please advise if my reaction to the performed procedure is normal. Is there any way to get my face to the normal size? Please HELP!!

It is Day 6 after I had ePrime laser rejuvenation procedure performed on my face. My face looks worse, swollen, red and navy blue in color, feels very dry with bumps under the skin. I do not wash my face and apply an ointment twice per day. My face is a mess like a huge balloon with bruises under eyes! Can you add any advice as to how long this will last? There is some peeling and itching, but I believe it is because of the ointment. SCARED! I am waiting for some advice. THANKS!

Today is Monday, 7th day after the procedure. I cannot go outside; my face is still swollen, red, blue and yellow in color with broken capillaries in the skin and bruises under eyes. Any advice?

Still look and feel bad. Went to see my dermatologist who recommended me to put some makeup on. I still have pain and bruises all over my face. Can not even touch my skin to put the makeup on.

8th day after the procedure. My face is still swollen, red, blue and yellow in color with broken capillaries in the skin and severe bruises under eyes, neck, shoulders. Taking Arnica and finished with antibiotics and steroids. Any advice?

Britt,
Thank you for your comments!
I follow all of the instruction for post laser procedure, but my face and neck are still swollen, covered with bruises and broken capillaries. Lumps and bumps under my skin. Taking Arnica, drinking plenty of water, using Arnica cream on my skin. Anything else that might help to get rid of the bruises and broken capillaries faster?

Day 11: My face is still a little bit swollen, very red with broken capillaries on the skin and severe bruises under eyes, neck, shoulders. My skin is extremely dry. Any advice to get rid of redness, broken capillaries, bruises and dryness of the skin?

21st day after ePrime procedure. My face is still a little bit swollen with red and blue marks, bumps under the skin. I wash my face with CeraVe hydrating cleanser and apply SkinMedica Redness Relief CalmPlex cream once per day. The doctor still saying it is my body reaction to the rejuvenation procedure or possible anesthesia in combination with laser. I had Matrix laser procedure performed on my face previously and did not have any reaction. For Matrix the same anesthesia was used. My face is a mess! The doctor is giving about 2 more weeks for me to recover. The doctor cannot guarantee that bumps under the skin will go away. Has anybody had same reaction to ePrime? THANKS!

Updated on 24 May 2011:
Today is Day 29 after the ePrime. My face has less bruises and less swollen, but still has problems: there is a pain on my jaw line, which is still numb and left side of the face still swelled up. My face has bumps under my skin like hard accumulations. I have redness and bright red marks on my face which I have to cover up with a lot of makeup. The skin is extremely sensitive to the sun. I use SkinMedica Sunscreen SPF 30+ and re-apply OBAGI Nu-Derm SPF 35 during a day. Both of the sun-creams were recommended by doctor. My skin is also sensitive to any wash; it is red even when I wash my face with face wash for sensitive skin. I have deep prominent wrinkles around my mouth and saggy skin under my chin. This is visible; I have pictures before and after ePrime procedure and never had this prominent wrinkles and sagging of the skin. My dermatolog recommended this procedure to get rid of the scars, but I have more scars and broken capillaries on my chin, around my mouth and nose area now. The ePrime procedure is painful, recovery time is very long and I do not see any improvement in my skin tone and texture.

36 Day after the ePrime procedure. I do not see any improvement that the advertisement of this procedure promises. No improvement in texture, no improvement in tone at all. My skin tone has yellowish, grey, red and blue color. I have prominent wrinkles around my mouth and sagging skin on my jaw line. I have pain in the left side of my jaw line. My skin is extremely sensitive to the skin wash and sun. I have bumps under my skin and brake ups. My skin has a lot of scar around my mouth and jaw line. Is there any way to get rid of the scarring, saggy skin and improve skin tone after the laser procedure?

Updated on 2 Jun 2011:
Day 38th after ePrime procedure, I do NOT see any improvement in my skin tone, volume or texture as advertized. My scars after ePrime laser are very visible and dark in color especially on my chin and jaw line. Left side of the face is still swollen and painful on jaw line (which is not normal after more than a month after any laser procedure). I’m incredibly disappointed. My skin has more prominent wrinkles around my mouth and sagging skin on my jaw line. I have to cover up uneven tone and dark marks of my skin with a lot of makeup. My skin is extremely sensitive to the sun, even when I wear SPF 30+ it turns red. I have bumps UNDER my skin. I was given creams to reduce the redness and anti-acne foam to treat bumps under the skin by the dermatologist who performed ePrime laser procedure on me. I still continue to take the Solodyn. Does anybody have the same reaction for so long? Are there any masks or peels would help to get my skin back to normal? Thanks for any advice.

Updated on 7 Jun 2011:
Day 43. I still have a pain on my chin and jaw line. My skin has some redness and swelling. It does not seem to be a normal healing process to have the swelling for about 1 ½ months after ePrime laser procedure. NO improvement in skin tone, texture or volume. My skin tone is more grayish-yellow than I had before the procedure. I have burned scars and brown spots after ePrime laser, which I have to cover up with makeup. The scars and brown spots are on my chin, jaw line and cheeks. The skin on my face is much looser than before the procedure. I have deeper lines around my mouth than prior to the procedure. Is there anything can be done to get rid of the scars and brown spots left after laser procedure? Thanks for any advice.

I still have bumps UNDER my skin, which are not acne. I am using creams to reduce the redness and anti-acne foam to treat bumps under the skin but not a lot of improvement yet.

Day 75 (2 month and 14 days) after ePrime skin rejuvenation procedure: my chin and jaw line areas have very visible and permanent scars, dark brown spots on my cheeks which look like burns, pigmentation, broken capillaries. I can't go in the sun at all due to the areas around the scars getting dark and making them more prominent, so no any outdoor activities for me. I spend a lot of time every day working with makeup to hide these scars. I am still trying different products recommended by the dermatologist to correct the scarring and brown spots. My physician recommended me a new treatment - elure Advanced Skin Lightening that I have been using for about month now. I had one Vitalize peel by SkinMedica.
My face has swelling, especially left side of my face, neck and shoulder. I have bumps under skin on my face. I still have pain on the left side of jaw line and neck. My skin has more prominent wrinkles around my mouth and sagging skin on jaw line. My skin is loose under my neck. No improvement in my skin tone, volume or texture.

Updated on 25 Jul 2011:
3 month after ePrime: I have multiple large brown spots on each cheek and scars on face and jaw line. I have a significant post-treatment hyperpigmentation. NO improvements in skin tone, texture or laxity. I have prominent wrinkles around my mouth. I still have pain on the left side of my face. My face still has swelling, especially left side of my face, neck and shoulder (which is visible in photos). I have bumps under my skin which are not blemishes; they are more like hard accumulations. My dermatologist told me that it is a “collagen formation”. I use Elure creams and had 2 Vitalize peels. I wear coverings on my face to hide the deep scarring from the procedure. I still experience loss of confidence and self-esteem, anxiety and shame over facial scars and hyperpigmentation caused by this “quick and simple” procedure.

Updated on 25 Aug 2011:

Day 122 after ePrime - Energy Based Dermal Remodeling procedure (4 month): I use Elure creams and had three Vitalize peels by SkinMedica. I am still recovering after the damage. I do not notice any facial volume, no improvement in skin tone or laxity. I have sagging skin under the jowls, noticeable wrinkles around the mouth. I still have some redness, swelling and pain especially on the left side of my face and neck after the ePRIME treatment. My face is shifting on left side. I have brown spots on my cheeks – no going on the sun this summer at all. I have to apply a lot of make-up to cover-up the treated area. Terrible!!

Updated on 16 Nov 2011:
6 month and 21 day after ePrime - I am still healing:
- NO increase in my skin thickness or volume - I have sagging skin under the jowls, noticeable wrinkles around the mouth.
- Extremely painful and NOT simple procedure. In my case I was not able to drive myself home after the treatment. I was not able to return to usual activities the next day or 2 more months after the treatment. I had severe redness, swelling and bruising which could not covered with makeup within 24 hours. I could not even touch my skin, not only to put some make up on.
- I still have pain under the jowls, especially on the left side of my face and neck. My face is shifting on left side.
- NO signs that my skin produces any natural new collagen or new elastin or new hyaluronic acid over time (6 and 1/2 month – is a long time!!!)
- NO improvement in my skin tone or laxity. NO “a lasting, natural, more youthful appearance from ePRIME.” I still have some redness, brown spots and a lot of SCARS. I have to apply make-up to cover-up the treated area.
- I can NOT report seeing any improvement. I had only one treatment to rejuvenate my skin with ePRIME and I would never do it again!

Conclusion: Don't do it. It is not true that this procedure does not have any side effects. I am not sure how multiple clinical studies were performed on ePrime, but I can definitely report that I am NOT satisfied with the treatment results. The skin is NOT getting better gradually how the doctor who performed ePrime on me promised.

Updated on 2 Apr 2012:
11 month and 7 days: I can definitely say – NO ANY IMPROVEMENT after ePrime! I am still treating the damage: scars, brown spots on top of the scars. Not treatable – bumps under the skin on my jawline, sagging skin under the jowls, my face is shifting on left side. I would expect any good result after this procedure but there are NONE!

Updated on 7 May 2012:
1 year and 10 days: I can definitely state NO improvement or lifting or any other positive effects after the procedure performed with the ePrime radiofrequency generator that supposed to “have the ability to monitor and deliver precise doses of energy to rehabilitate aged skin “

I am still recovering from the damage: scars, brown spots, discoloration. NOT treatable – bumps under the skin on my jawline, sagging skin under the jowls, my face is still shifting on left side.

The new name of the procedure with ePrime is Evolastin, but it does not matter how the procedure would be called it is still uses the same just ‘improved” device which does nothing!

NO dermal remodeling
NO improvements in skin quality
NO improvement in skin tone
NO increased volume
NO new collagen production
NO any positive improvement in my jawline
NO wrinkles improvement

CONCLUSION: I would never recommend this treatment to anybody; it is a waste of money.

How are you today? I booked an appointment for eprime the 1 june here in sweden and it´s new!

Why did you react this way? Have you got any answers from the doctors?

Many thanks in advance, Best regards

Hello Mary,
Did you do ePrime? How was your experience?
Thanks!
Mary in sweden 2 Jun 2011
No, i didn´t. I postponed it.

Good! There are better alternatives available, I saw a patient after CO2 full face laser resurface. Her complete recovery time was 8 days and the skin looks great. In my case I struggle to find the way to get rid of the damage after ePrime which recovery time should be 3-4 days. I am very disappointed.
nadiahoney 5 Dec 2011
wow -- still amazed at how disappointed you were -- it's hard to tell if this will be permanent. I can see that you have had other stuff done, never a bad result. I don't get it! Also, if you never had anything on your neck, shouldn't yr doc have realized something was up the second you reported overly extensive response? I wonder about so much with this. Since you documented everything, that's good -- the people who invented this of course should refund yr money, and possibly pay for your future needed treatments. Unless they can figure out something YOU did wrong, they are entirely responsible, IMO.

Dear Mosellv,
As the Product Manager responsible for ePRIME, I am always concerned about the physician’s and patient’s experience treating with ePRIME. I was indeed present at your session and from my observations, the treatment was delivered consistent with many of the other ePRIME treatments I have previously watched. I wanted to reassure you that ePRIME has an excellent safety record, with published and pending studies reporting no adverse events or complications in treating over 150 patients. Side effects from the ePRIME treatment are generally mild and include redness, superficial bruising and swelling. While temporary edema is almost always observed following an ePRIME treatment, the amount of swelling experienced depends on the individual patient. Most physicians consider the swelling an indication that the normal healing process, which generates new dermal tissue, is taking place. Typically, patients can return to usual activities as soon as 5-7 days and sometimes as soon as 24-48 hours, although individual healing times vary from patient to patient. All ePRIME treatment side effects can be mitigated by appropriate physician post-treatment care and adhering to physician instructions. There has never been any report of any permanent side-effects as a result of an ePRIME treatment and even those patients that experience extended downtimes demonstrate improved skin tone and volume, sometimes beyond typical expectations. We will continue to follow your progress through your practitioner. Please keep updating your blog with your current progress!
Sincerely yours,
Lou Amberg III.

Day 39 after my skin were burned from the ePrime. I am still not looking and feeling good. I have to apply tons of make up on my face to cover up the damage. I have a pain on the jaw line, especially left side. According to the laser professional consultation my skin was burned by the ePrime, including epidermis and derma. The recovery time can take up to a year. I am very disappointed!

Dear Mosellv:

Again, I cannot express how disheartened we are to learn of your experience and would like to personally do what we can to help you. HIPAA laws prevents us from contacting you directly but please do not hesitate to contact me directly at 508-358-7400. We have already made contact with your physician and she, along with the company, remains very conscientious in following your post-care.

As mentioned above, there have been no reports of similar adverse events in treating 100’s of other patients with ePRIME. Please note that well-intentioned people will offer their advice to you, but because ePRIME is new technology whose science is widely unknown to most practitioners (i.e., ePRIME is often mistakenly referred to as a 'laser.’) advice is best to be taken from an experienced practitioner.

We highly recommend that you continue to follow your provider’s post-care instructions and encourage you to contact us directly, the manufacturer of this device, should you wish to discuss your treatment with another physician with relevant treatment experience.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Lou,
I called ePrime as laser because of the description provided by the practitioner who specializes in Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery and who performed this procedure on my face. It was explained by my dermatologist before the procedure that “the ePrime is a unique volumizing laser that uses radiofrequency to stimulate your skin to form new collagen and elastic tissue, to non-surgically tighten and lift your skin and help fill in wrinkles and hollows.” But according to the Syneron website: “The ePRIME™ System from Syneron and Candela is a minimally invasive RF aesthetic device designed for the treatment of aging skin.” I would like to apologize for mistakenly calling ePrime as a laser. I am not a skin professional and have not been trained or used the ePrime device professionally.
I am following all the post-care instructions but do not see any improvement yet.
What other treatments can be offered?
I will keep updating on the progress.

I'm so sorry about your painful experience. You had beautiful skin and I wish your derm would have been more mindful and honest in leaving your skin alone.

L. Amberg 111 for Syneron Candella,From the pitures taken before the procedure, Mosellv certainly looks a lot younger from the last picture posted but with a lot of blemishes and lumps. How can those be explained and what could have been done to prenent her ordeal.Does the product need further testing and fine-tuning to prevent a reccurence of adverse outcome?
mosellv_md 25 Jul 2011
Dear Emy4real,

My skin does not look and feel any younger. May be pictures I posted are not a good quality; I do not have a lot of blemishes. I have multiple large brown spots and scars on lower part of my face and jaw line. I have prominent wrinkles around my mouth which I did not have before the procedure. The skin under my neck is looser. My face still (3 month after the procedure) has swelling, especially left side of my face, neck and shoulder. I have bumps under my skin which are not blemishes; they are more like hard accumulations. My dermatologist told me that it is a “collagen”.

I have done my research on the internet before I had this procedure. Also, Lou and my dermatologist assured me that the treatment was safe, with no downtime. The settings of the machine were too high for my skin type.

Now it will take some time for my skin to improve. I am desperately trying to get help for my damaged skin caused by this procedure. I regret to have done this procedure.
emy4real 24 Aug 2011
I am truely sorry to hear all that you have passed through.Have there been any suggestions on how to get a definite cure for this problem.
nadiahoney 2 Dec 2011
Hey -- WOW I am overwhelmed by how horrible this turned out for you! You seemed to have had other procedures without such horrible effects. Actually, I agree that in the final pic, your skin DOES look younger (albeit with scarring) but you say it's the pictures themselves, that it's not the case in person. I have been considering this procedure and I am very grateful to you for your honest coverage. I read about it VERY recently in a mag out of Chicago, when i was visiting, and they touted it as the new, hot procedure, that is only done "by the best" and exclusively selected doctors. Apparently, that doesn't stop it from hurting people like yourself -- and I was even going to visit the same doc as you, since I live in the same area!! I NEVER expected to hear that it could go so horribly wrong. I thought RF went deep beneath and shouldn't affect the top layer (I want tightening, and my top layer is just fine, thanks to years of Retin-A, I think, or maybe heredity.) I feel for you -- I truly hope you find some way to heal, inside and out. Why do they never tell you what can go wrong in these magazines? I want to write to the mag (gotta go get it out of the garbage) and let them know what happened to you! This sounds a lot like the bad results from Thermage, also a RF treatment. Do you think it was the doctor you went to? Have you ever had a reaction like this to ANYTHING? Who else would have this happen? Since you had other procedures (I skimmed what you said but I think I remember you mentioned you had) without such consequences, that shows to me it is absolutely either the doc or the RF itself. I can't believe how long it has taken to heal -- now I know that is NOT normal. Even a face lift heals faster.
mosellv_md 4 Dec 2011
Thanks for your response. I am hoping that the people would do their research before going through this procedure. This procedure was advertized in the last Bazaar magazine. The advertisers and magazines supposed to check if there are any complications after the ePrime procedure and let people know what to expect. I can NOT find any good result after this procedure. I consulted other specialists and according to them it can take up to a year or more for my skin to heal. None of the doctors can suggest any alternative treatments at this time (7 month after the ePrime). I have not had any reaction to anything like this. The lunch-time procedure that supposed to beautify my skin turned as a horrible experience for me.
nadiahoney 5 Dec 2011
and who cares about looking younger (which i do agree with, in the last pic she does look a bit younger) if she has those horrible other problems? I was excited about this procedure -- and what makes it even scarier, was going to see the same doctor! That doc is the closest to my area that does this, and she advertised -- that's how I knew about her. Well forget it now! Even if I would have had great results -- she doesn't deserve my business, or any for that matter. Doctors are supposed to research any and all possible bad results, just as I do where I work, and it is only right to inform a patient about these possible results. That's all there is to it. And, yeah -- WHY did this happen? Too strong doesn't explain it well enough, sounds like this procedure is too unreliable. Are there others who had such awful results? Saying she had it turned up too high on this patient really worries me for other people. So this means some don't get it as strong as necessary, or conversely, others are scarred, possibly permanently.
nadiahoney 5 Dec 2011
I agree with yr concern. I will not get this procedure now, since not only are good results a definite (seems like this is the case with lots of RF procedures) but really bad ones occur, too. Why? Remember how so many people complained about bumps and asymmetry and other stuff with Thermage (that's RF too, an earlier version, I think.) This seems to have similar complications, but I don't know and wish I did. Is this a rare or one-time occurrence? Possibly a doctor who answers questions on this site or others might hazard a guess.
cveroleyva 21 Jul 2011
Maybe lasers should be with treated with the same respect as invasive cosmetic surgery. A provider should look at skin and symptoms, and deem if the benefits out weigh the risks associated. I suppose it would turn away alot of clientle, but the practices would still flourish with providing safer alternatives. Guess those machines are too expensive for some providers to think ethically and put the patient first.
cveroleyva 25 Jul 2011
Hi Mosellv,
I have those collagen bumps as well. As a matter of fact, they are not listed as a side effect, and they are quite common, and I never heard of them until I saw them develop on my own skin. I researched this procedure alot too, I had no idea it could turn out like this.
cveroleyva 25 Jul 2011
May I ask what prompted you to have the procedure done? I did it for a post acne blemishes and they made ipl sound so gentle and "good" for my skin. I should have just stuck to waiting it out until they went away on their own.
mosellv_md 25 Jul 2011
Hi Cveroleyva,
I was interested in improving the texture and tone of the skin and my dermatologist recommended ePrime procedure which supposed to be painless, can be performed on all skin types with few risks and side effects. From my experience I can tell the procedure is VERY painful. My derm had to inject more and more anesthesia during the procedure.
nadiahoney 5 Dec 2011
cveroleyva -- did you have this procedure (EPrime) done too? Or was it IPL that caused the bumps? Btw from what I read, RF is not really for the outermost skin layers, rather it goes deeper without treating things like acne -- thus if someone told you that any RF helped acne-like bumps, I am pretty sure that's not correct. Now I have heard that IPL is good for acne and other things, too, but E-Prime (from my understanding) is more for lifting and firming from the lower SMAS layer.
