More Details about my Explantation

Here are a few details about my explant surgery 2 days ago. I did have my capsules
removed and tissue from those capsules sent to a lab. Will update with those
findings. Not expecting any bad news...but glad Dr. Koenig suggested we get it checked out
as I want to know the facts. The proceedure was relatively painless even with the
capsulectomy. I arrived at 10am and left 3 hours later. I was nervous but the staff was wonderful and I felt like I was in good hands. I have only taken tylenol and have not needed anything stronger for pain. Drains in both sides which will come our next week. Have to empty drains a couple times a day and record output. Also doing required breathing measurements...no problem there.

I had 2 PS consultations for this surgery. One PS wanted to leave my capsules in and the other thought it best to take them out. I opted to have them out and am feeling good about that choice.

After having my first and only child at age 29, I...

After having my first and only child at age 29, I was amazed how good my body looked with my (temporary) post pregnancy larger breasts. This led me to investigate the possibility of having Breast Augmentation which I did one year later in 1986. I had a good surgeon, got a great result and loved
everything about my new breasts. They were pretty and soft and really balanced out my figure in a nice way. I had BA under the muscle with 325 silicone (Dow Corning) implants. At the time I was told that they were prefectly safe, would last a lifetime and never sag. Not true, as we now know, however I do believe my doctor believed this information when he gave it to me and I suspect he was misinformed (as we all were) by the manufacturers of the implants. (I vividly recall him placing an
implant on a table and hitting it really hard to show me how indestructible it was.) During the 1990's there was a huge class action law-suit against Dow Corning which caused me a great deal of concern. I filed, which included one trip to an attorney who had advertised the law-suit in a newspaper and filled out some paperwork including an essay on what my health concerns were and how I felt about the whole Dow Corning scandal. I almost had my implants out during this time (for fear of my health) but information was so varied that I kept putting it off. I really did not expect anything to come of the law suit but, much to my surprise, I got a phone call about a year later and did receive a settlement. The FDA eventually reinstated silicone implants so I kept them.
Fast forwrd 20 years and I found out (almost by accident) that my implants were ruptured. I was having a sonagram of a small lump in my armpit (inflamed lynph node) when I overheard on tech
say something to another tech about my implant probably being compromised. I questioned them
at which point they got very flustered and left the room and a supervisor came in. All she would say was that I should follow up with my doctor and consider having an MRI. Shocking to think that I could have left that appointment that day as clueless as when I went in if I had not overheard a brief comment that was not meant for me to hear.
I did have the MRI and was told that my right implant showed mild partially deflated rupture and the left was in complete collapse. No extracapsular silicone was noted in either breast. I was shocked,
scared and devastated as I was still under the impression that they were lifetime devices. My immediate reaction was to have them out asap and not replaced. I was 50 at the time. I consulted
with 2 PSs. One was a nightmare (and I literally had a nightmare about her that night) and the other
was very kind and helpful. Needless to say I went with the kind and helpful one! He really calmed
me down and suggested that I consider replacing my implants as he felt strongly that I would not be
happy with my results if I explanted only. I have always been in good shape and athletic and I guess it was fear of what I would look like with implants that made me decide to get them again. So I had them replaced.
Fast forward 8 years and my implants are uncomfortable due to some hardening of the capsules. I was never overly happy with them as they were too large for me personally (400s). My surgeon felt I would get more life if we went larger....mistake! I never really liked how they sat on me, kind of unnatural and wide and I always wore loose tops and minimizing sports bras. I could live with the
fact that they didn't look great but when they became uncomfortable I decided "what's the point".
I was determined to have them out and not replaced and just deal with whatever my result was.
Yesterday I had my surgery. My implants are out and not replaced and I feel so good about doing it.
I chose a good PS who understood where I was coming from and did not try to talk me into anything else. No implants....no breast lift....no nothing....just me. I have a drain on each side but the surgery
went well and I am having little to no discomfort. I am feeling emotional and thankful for a wonderful husband who just wants me to be happy and healthy. (He and my daughter are the only people I have ever discussed my implants with other than doctors.) I have not seen my results yet and I am a little
afraid to look. I am sure they will be saggy and small and am hoping I can handle it with a good attitude and the right bra.
Please forgive my lengthy story. It has been immensely helpful reading about all of your journeys over the past few months and completely therapeutic writing my own. I am grateful for your sharing as it was a huge source of information and direction to me. You ladies gave me the confidence to do what I really wanted to do 8 years ago. Thank you from my heart.
