Several years ago I met Dr Harrington for consultation regarding bilat breast reduction. At that time, insurance would not cover the procedure. Upon the recommendation of a friend who had undergone bilat mastectomy and reconstruction with a different plastic surgeon, I consulted him; based on newer onset of symptoms and a different insurance carrier, the procedure was covered. In the 2 preop visits with this doctor, I mentioned that I wanted to be as small as possible, and asked about cup size afterwards (I was a DDD). Both times he hedged the topic, saying it was "relative". As a health care professional, he reminded me 3 different times to call if there were postop concerns. 36 hours after surgery I developed a hematoma in the left breast. When I called and asked to be seen the next day, I was told his schedule was full. Over the next several days I developed pain and fullnes in the left armpit, which progressed down the left arm. A hematoma was confirmed by my primary MD, who said let's watch the symptoms to make sure no vascular blockage takes place. Other than the raised swollen area on the left breast, these symptoms self terminated after 5 days; when described to the plastic surgeon, he said it must be something related to the IV I had in my left hand. He did a visual exam only of the breasts. In a follow-up postop visit I mentioned how the cup size had not appreciably changed. He said "Is your neck and shoulder pain gone?". It would appear that he didn't really care about what I was going to look like/live with afterwards. There was a permanent puckering and discoloration on the upper left areola. I felt patronized and unheard. So, although it took 6 months, I went back to Dr Harrington. And this time I had to pay out of pocket. And she listened, and sculpted a revision bilat breast reduction like the sensitive, compassionate artist that she is.
