“Just Started Treatment! - Phoenix, AZ”
Spent: $2,799 in Phoenix, AZ
First off, I want to apologize for such a long post, but I want to make sure I cover everything that I wanted to know before I started my treatment.
My cost reflects a groupon deal, I know you all are probably thinking I am crazy for going with a provider that offers groupon rates. I was hesitant at first, but turns out this was the best purchase I have made! I made sure to read all the fine print, call the dentist's office and ask questions as well as review the dentist online before purchasing. I went to two other ortho/dentists consults on braces and invisalign. One quoted me $5000-$6500 and another quoted $4300, with treatment time 18-24 months. My insurance doesn't cover adult braces, so this was a great deal for me. I'm 25 and definitely did not want to get traditional braces if I didn't need to.
My treatment plan should last 8 1/2 months (currently coming up on four weeks), a significant difference from what others have quoted me for treatment time; need I say again that I am ecstatic that I chose invisalign. I removed my wisdom teeth late (age of 22), so my teeth are severly crowded. I have wanted to straighten my teeth forever, I hate my mouth and think it makes me look ugly; little dramatic, I know, but that's just the way I feel.
Experience so far:
It took three weeks from the day impressions were taken to receive my trays. The dentist's office was kind enough to video message me a copy of my clincheck since I was not able to make it in the office to view and approve it.
I received 3 buttons on top and four on bottom the day I received my trays. Two of the buttons fell off within a few days of attaching them and I had to get them replaced. Haven't had an issue with that since.
At the end of the second week, my aligners started to scratch the inside of my cheek creating a sore. I just took a pair of nail files and slightly filed them, this took care of the issue.
Brushing my teeth in a public restroom is a little awkward and most restrooms have sensored faucets, can be a hassle brushing as the faucet turns off when you move your hand. Other than that it isn't too bad. If I'm on my way home after eating then I will put my aligners back in and wait to brush them until I get home.
Tips:
Rinse aligners as soon as you take them out, they'll smell if you don't. You don't need to use toothpaste (heard it can be abrasive and cause aligners to smell worse).
I advise to have two foldable travel toothbrushes (one for your mouth and one for aligners), floss, Colgate wisps (incase you don't have a sink to brush your teeth), travel size mouthwash and toothpaste, and toothpicks; all in a travel size carry pouch for on the go and to prevent something from leaking in your purse or bag. Course, this is all optional.
If there's a sharp edge, use a nail file to smooth edges.
Make sure you floss, I even rinse out my mouth with mouthwash after flossing to make sure I got all food out of my mouth.
You can watch videos on Youtube for more information and personal experiences. It's easier to type "invisalign update" if you're interested in personal experiences, otherwise you'll get a lot of videos from dentists and orthodontists.
I posted before pics from an ortho consult as well as a pic with the aligners in my mouth, you can see that the buttons aren't so bad. Hope this helps!

Seven weeks in and I have noticed that My mouth sometimes becomes extremely dry. Sometimes so dry I end of coughing and dry heaving. Of course I try to avoid this as much as possible by drinking water as soon as my mouth feels dry. Another solution I noticed that helps is if i put my aligners in when they are drenched in water. Not a pleasant experience, so make sure you have water with you at all times!

So, I ended up moving to San Diego and had to find a new provider. I went to two different consultations (no need to go to that many since I am already in invisalign) to compare prices. I went to an ortho elite provider and a general dentist that was premier provider. I ended up going to the Ortho because I believed that he can provide a better service for roughly the same price ($1975 to take over my existing case including retainers).
The ortho decided to do a mid-course correction. He put spacers (rubber bands) between my teeth and left them in for four days (these hurt worse than switching any of my trays, not the process of inserting the bands but just the teeth moving). Today they removed the spacers and performed IPR (filing between the teeth) and took new impressions. I should receive my new trays within 2-3 weeks. I just put my bottom trays in from the previous provider so that my teeth don't shift back to its original position (I left the bottom out while the spacers were in because the tray wouldn't fit). There was a new level of pain, who knew teeth could move so much in such a little time. Hopefully my new trays come in soon and this process goes well!
Updated on 3 Apr 2012:
5 weeks later, my new trays have come in. I have a total of 33 trays, upper and lower. Significantly more than my original plan, but it is worth it to have a good end result. This will put me at around a year for treatment time. Also, they will be placing rubber bands on my trays to shift my teeth later in treatment.
Even though I had to pay extra, the total amount (from provider one and provider two) it still came to be cheaper than an original price for invisalign. Many say that there is not a difference between receiving care from a dentist versus an ortho, but I beg to differ. Don't get me wrong, the general dentist i was with was great, but mentioned nothing about IPR or using bands to move my teeth and quoted me 8 1/2 months (which was unbelievable considering the condition my teeth were in, you can look at my pics). I went to the ortho and he automatically told me that I would not be finished in 8 1/2 months and would need more time. Mentioned and throughly explained why IPR would be needed. Also, mentioned that bands would be needed to shift my teeth as well. This was in the initial consultation for invisalign. Trays came in and sure enough, I had another 33 trays! Def. not what I wanted to hear, but it is worth perfect teeth in the end; plus, the treatment time would still be shorter than receiving traditional braces. I would recommend going to an ortho versus a general dentist. Of course, it is preference and depends on the severity of your teeth. If your teeth are not as severe as mine, then you may be fine using a general, but if your teeth are severe like mine, it is worth going to an ortho because of their speciality.

Helpful review?
What a great review!! Thanks for including so much helpful information, and pictures!
I think you are right, it is hard to see the trays in your mouth in the picture where you have them on.
Its good to hear that you have been having a good experience so far with a dentist you found from a Groupon deal. I've always been a little skeptical of that, so I really appreciate you sharing that is how you found them.
If you are four weeks in, I'm guessing you are on tray #2. Do you happen to know how many trays total are in your treatment plan?
It's good to hear that you agree that they are "invisable."
Thanks! I've found many great deals on groupon, just remember to always read reviews about the places before purchasing!
Yes, I will be switching to tray 3 this Thursday. I have 16 trays for the top and 17 for the bottom. I'm surprised how fast my treatment is considering how crooked my teeth are. Hopefully all goes well!
I hope all goes well for you too - and will be looking forward to your updates! :)
Thanks for posting that you got a deal on groupon. I have just bought one myself and im a little concerned now that there will be extra charges for xrays or time spent in the chair.
I wonder other than your changing specialist did u encounter extra fees after you had bought your groupon?
Thanks
Stephen
I go to Dr. Reed, his office is located off of 101 and Bell,(480) 367-0300. They're doing a special right now for referrals. Just tell them BT referred you and you should get $1000 off your treatment if you go with them. Consultation should be free.
I know what you mean, I hated getting in photos. I'm definitely glad I chose to do invisalign and I'm more confident and smile more even though there hasn't been much of a change. I know my teeth are moving because I'm able to easily floss. Beforehand I would have a hard time and the floss would always snag because of my severely crowded teeth. I would recommend them. You don't have to change your lifestyle drastically, you just have to brush and floss after every meal. Only other change is I snack less, which I think is a benefit. At first I was strict about not eating or drinking with aligners in but I will drink alcoholic beverages with them in or eat something soft that doesn't need a lot of chewing, just your preference of what you want to do. Don't tell Dr. Reed I do that though. Lol let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks for the update!
Yeah, others have mentioned experiencing dry mouth while in Invisalign also. To hopefully help you get some more tips on how to deal with it click here to read other reviews where people have mentioned it.

Oh, I feel for you with the spacers! Amazing how uncomfortable having those tiny little things between your teeth is, isn't it?!
How many spacers did you have to get?
Loved reading your update Cardinals! I'm very glad to hear you are seeing the value in going to an orthodontist. Like you mentioned, I think the extra time in treatment will be well worth the trade of the quality of outcome you receive!
Keep us updated how its going for you. :)
