WORTH IT$2,799
5 weeks later, my new trays have come in. I have a total of 33 trays, upper and lower. Significantly more than my original plan, but it is worth it to have a good end result. This will put me at around a year for treatment time. Also, they will be placing rubber bands on my trays to shift my teeth later in treatment.

Even though I had to pay extra, the total amount (from provider one and provider two) it still came to be cheaper than an original price for invisalign. Many say that there is not a difference between receiving care from a dentist versus an ortho, but I beg to differ. Don't get me wrong, the general dentist i was with was great, but mentioned nothing about IPR or using bands to move my teeth and quoted me 8 1/2 months (which was unbelievable considering the condition my teeth were in, you can look at my pics). I went to the ortho and he automatically told me that I would not be finished in 8 1/2 months and would need more time. Mentioned and throughly explained why IPR would be needed. Also, mentioned that bands would be needed to shift my teeth as well. This was in the initial consultation for invisalign. Trays came in and sure enough, I had another 33 trays! Def. not what I wanted to hear, but it is worth perfect teeth in the end; plus, the treatment time would still be shorter than receiving traditional braces. I would recommend going to an ortho versus a general dentist. Of course, it is preference and depends on the severity of your teeth. If your teeth are not as severe as mine, then you may be fine using a general, but if your teeth are severe like mine, it is worth going to an ortho because of their speciality.

I'm curious why you had to spend more money after the Groupon deal? There is currently one going on in my area and I'm hesitant to buy. It says complete treatment and I asked questions about any other fees and they said no. Only other costs might be regular dental work that may be needed, cavities etc. I have my own dds for that though. thanks
I had to pay more because I changed providers, the additional cost was for service fees and such. Wouldn't be fair for the ortho to take on my case for free. One thing that I have learned through this experience is to make sure you check out the provider. My original provider was a regular dentist and quoted me 8 1/2 months. My new provider is an ortho and my treatment time will be around 12 months. Some people say there is not a difference going to a general dentist and ortho, but I believe there is. An ortho is a specialist on the formation of teeth and how they move. Even though I had to pay extra, I am glad that I am going to an ortho now. I feel more confident that I will receive great care. It's up to you though. The groupon offer is a good deal, just make sure you do your research on the provider and read patient reviews on yelp or other search engines.
Forgot to mention that my original plan was 16 trays on top and 17 on bottom. My new plan is 33 trays on both upper and lower; quite a significant difference.
so had you stayed at your groupon place there were no extra fees?
No, I moved out of state to a different place. That's why there was an additional fee. If you stay at your original provider, whether it be a general dentist or ortho, there should not be any additional fees with the groupon purchase. Be sure to read the fine print and double check with the provider though. If you lose a set of your trays and they send you a replacement or you need dental work, of course that would not be included in the groupon price and would be paid out of pocket.

Loved reading your update Cardinals! I'm very glad to hear you are seeing the value in going to an orthodontist. Like you mentioned, I think the extra time in treatment will be well worth the trade of the quality of outcome you receive!

Keep us updated how its going for you. :)

I heard it takes about a month or more to get a new set of aligners. Guess not, it it really only two to three weeks?
It depends. My first set of trays from my first provider came in a short amount of time. My revision from my second provider took 5 weeks. It's just one of those things if you're lucky, you'll get them sooner. Anticipate a month though or else you'll get disappointed every extra week you have to wait.
Are there any drawbacks to getting Invisalign? Slobbering, or uncomfortable fits that constntly have to be fixed?
The main drawback is dry mouth. If you don't drink water consistently, you will get it, and it can be irritating. I haven't had it in a while though. I do take my trays out when I run because it will get dry and affect my running. Sometimes there are small things such as sharp edges on the trays, but that could be fixed with a small file. Sometimes I do get lazy and don't brush my teeth right after I eat. Minor things like that are worth the end result though.

So, I ended up moving to San Diego and had to find a new provider. I went to two different consultations (no need to go to that many since I am already in invisalign) to compare prices. I went to an ortho elite provider and a general dentist that was premier provider. I ended up going to the Ortho because I believed that he can provide a better service for roughly the same price ($1975 to take over my existing case including retainers).

The ortho decided to do a mid-course correction. He put spacers (rubber bands) between my teeth and left them in for four days (these hurt worse than switching any of my trays, not the process of inserting the bands but just the teeth moving). Today they removed the spacers and performed IPR (filing between the teeth) and took new impressions. I should receive my new trays within 2-3 weeks. I just put my bottom trays in from the previous provider so that my teeth don't shift back to its original position (I left the bottom out while the spacers were in because the tray wouldn't fit). There was a new level of pain, who knew teeth could move so much in such a little time. Hopefully my new trays come in soon and this process goes well!

Oh, I feel for you with the spacers! Amazing how uncomfortable having those tiny little things between your teeth is, isn't it?!

How many spacers did you have to get?

Seven weeks in and I have noticed that My mouth sometimes becomes extremely dry. Sometimes so dry I end of coughing and dry heaving. Of course I try to avoid this as much as possible by drinking water as soon as my mouth feels dry. Another solution I noticed that helps is if i put my aligners in when they are drenched in water. Not a pleasant experience, so make sure you have water with you at all times!
