I was never fat growing up and was always called a string bean. I was lucky and inherited my grandma's "tall" genes ( I put that in quotations because most people in my family hover at 5 ft and below. I am around 5'4'' haha ). But I also inherited something all females in my family have, the "spare tire" around the midsection. Even at my most fit in high school, when I stayed around 120 lbs and very active, I had muffin top. Drove me nuts. Anyways as I went through college, terrible eating a drinking made me gain weight and I got up to about 145/148 lbs. 80% in my spare tire. UGH I HATED it! I eventually got rid of the weight and now I'm around 125 lbs. Still had the fantastic muffin top no matter what I did so I finally just said you know what, this is something I've always wanted. I'm going to do it.

My goal was to finally have at least some hips and somewhat of an hour glass shape. My love handles seemed to never allow that. Some said I looked great, but just that one spot, it made me self-conscious.

My PS was great. She was very comforting and personable. My mother knew she did good work bc a lot of her clients had gotten work done from her.

Day of Surgery:
I took 2 nausea pills they prescribe an hr before surgery. I got there at 7:45 am and they took me back immediately. They chatted with me, made me feel comfortable, my PS even gave me a hug haha. Once she marked me up and took pics, I was taken to surgery room. Anesthesiologist was a character and made me feel comfortable, told me everything he was doing as he did it and next thing you know, I was waking up and they said it was done (I did General Anesthesia). I had to pee SO bad. They gave me a bedpan but I just couldnt go. So they made me wait a bit then wheelchaired me to a bathroom. That was the most amazing feeling at the time. They got me into a really nice waiting room in a recliner and after a while sent me home. Told me to call 24/7 with any questions I had and gave me my next appt times.

Ooof I was sore and sleepy. I slept the next 5 hrs and woke up every hr. Had some soup, no nausea, slept some more. I started walking around some in the afternoon. Had trouble sleeping that first night and woke up around 5am.

The next day I just kept walking around the house some and took my pain pills every 4-6 hrs. Didn't feel nauseous at all so didn't take that medicine anymore. The first day after surgery I was very swollen. I felt like a bubble. It was hard to look in the mirror and see myself bigger than before but I did notice something. Looking at myself straight on, I could finally see somewhat of an hr glass figure even with all the swelling. Excellent. It was hard sitting down, more painful that day than it was surgery day. I tried laying on my stomach more but just never got comfortable. Felt restless til midnight then finally fell asleep. Woke up every few hours to pee. I've never peed so much at night before.

This morning I woke up and realized I havent had a bowel movement. And I always do everyday. I've heard bad stories about that so I took some milk of magnesia hoping that will help things along. I noticed my abs kinda hurt today and I think thats from them working over time to protect my back muscles. I've been drinking pineapple juice to help with swelling (not really sure if its working) and today I get to take my compression garments off the first time briefly so I can shower. I plan to start putting arnica gel on my flanks to help with bruising and swelling. Once I do all this, I'll take pictures and post my progress as I go along. Theres no bruising popping out from around my garment so I'm hoping when I take it off I don't see anything too crazy.

*2 days Post-Op: Sunday 2pm*

In my first post I forgot to list my stats:
Pre-Op
Waist: 28 1/2 in
Love Handle area: 32 in
Weight: 124 lb

Post-Op
Waist: 29 in (with garment on)
Love Handle area: (with garment on) 32 1/2 in (yay! so even with swelling and bulkiness not much difference)
Weight: 126 lb

So I took my garment off and can definitely see a difference in my shape! Holy moly I'm swollen, but definite difference. Yesterday my mom dragged down fall decorations from the attic and I helped her decorate. It hurts to bend over so I try to avoid that, but I'm able to pretty much do everything on my own. The day of surgery once I was home, I had to be helped off the couch, bed, toilet, everything, but by the next day, Saturday, I could do it on my own. I still hold on to railings and grab the sink to lower myself onto toilet and kinda have to do this weird side roll thing to get into bed, but without assistance. I was going to take pictures of myself without the garment today, but even after 30 seconds my skin felt weird and started hurting so I quickly rubbed the arnica gel on and put my garment back on. Its kinda grodie not taking a shower, but it hurts a little too much today without the garment on. I think I will wait to shower tomorrow. I'm not seeing anyone, so who cares. I'm staying at my parents house at the moment and they are the only ones who know I went ahead with this procedure. I managed to have a liiiitle bit of BM, but stomach just kinda hurts not with gas. Ugh. I'm about to go eat some fruit and hope that helps some. I might try walking down the street some since its gorgeous outside. I'm still kinda halfway waddling/shuffling around though.

*3 days Post-Op: Monday 4pm*

I actually got a full 8 hrs of sleep last night. Passed out around midnight woke up at 8am. This morning my stomach just felt tight and full, I just knew it was uncomfortable feeling bc I hadn't "gone" in 4 days. So I immediately took some more milk of magnesia hoping today it would do the trick and ate an apple. Oh boy, if anyone questions whether it works.....trust me, it does. Sorry this post is a little TMI (but for those that want to know the full experience), I have gone about 9 times today. First time finally got the stoppage out, then the rest of the day diarrhea. I've been making sure to drink lots and lots of water and I've been eating healthy all day to help. All fruit and some grilled chicken. Was craving a little something else, so also had 2 cinnamon graham crackers. On a good note though, took the garment off and still no major bruises and the swelling has gone down the tiiiniest bit I think. I've only had to take 1 pain killer today and just my antibiotic. So the pain is getting better. I think the arnica gel is definitely helping too. I posted pics and you can see I have very very little bruising, just a slight yellow bruise on back and some on the side.. hardly visible. I put it on first thing in the morning, around lunch, then before bed. Even if that's not what is helping, it still soothes it when I put it on. I walked down the neighborhood last night but still pretty much sat around the house today watching tv and answering work emails. I cheated on my healthy eating last night and had a s'more (we have a fire pit and it was a great fall day - couldn't resist) but other than that, I'm proud of how good I've been eating. I think it's important to keep lots of fluids in you and to eat healthy. That helps move things along on the insides as well, bc the pain killers can definitely stop you up. I wish I had researched that aspect a little more and prepared myself before the surgery. I have a feeling I'll look the same the next few days, so I'll post a pic once I hit the one week mark. Still happy I did this!

Today
Waist (without garment): 28 in
Love Handles: 32 in
Weight: 121 lb

So with swelling still here, my measurements are the same. I went down in weight though which is good. I know it's fluids finally leaving me (and I think it's also help from that milk of magnesia the other day, ugh god). I know it's only been 5 days, but I'm so anxious to see more results. I guess this is part of the fluctuating emotions people talk about afterwards. Yesterday I was stoked, today I looked at myself and thought, ehhh. BUT, staying optimistic. I found some pictures from a few years ago at my highest weight... even though I was really good about disguising it for the most part, omg it's still such a difference 25 lbs later. I think I might post some of those pics of my weight loss before I even had surgery. I can't wait to compare swimsuit pics from chunky 2009 to soon-to-be 6 month post-op swimsuit pics :)

Um WHAT?! Please check out the picture of me in the flowy pink shirt. I could almost cry from seeing the difference :)

Anyways, I woke up today feeling MUCH better about this surgery. I haven't had to take any pain pills at all (only 1 yesterday). But I had terrible heartburn yesterday. I think maybe it's bc of the compression garment because anytime I wear stuff that's tight, I tend to get it easier. But I've always had random heartburn, even while eating very healthy. Hmm, who knows. But I wanted to rip that compression garment off last night for sure. Today it's all gone! I went to Walmart and bought a spanx-like garment to wear underneath my really stiff garment. It smooths everything out a little more and because it didn't have a little flap to open to go use the bathroom, I cut it and sewed in my own snaps, haha. I thought why spend more money on that when I can easily do it myself. Boom. So when I start to not wear my stiffer compression garment in 2/3 weeks, I will just wear the spanx. Or if I need to wear a more form-fitting outfit before then, I'll just wear the spanx. It doesn't ride up or down and does a great job for my flanks. I wouldn't purchase some $100 gizmo when this works great for only $17.00. The only I pain I seem to have now is when I sneeze and change positions (from standing to sitting, vise versa). It's like.... it's hard to describe. A lot of people say needles stabbing you sort of, but it's a very brief pain and just makes me wince. I get my stitches taken out tomorrow so I'll post 1 week pictures then. yay!

*1 Week Post-Op: Friday 11:30*

So I got my stitches removed today, which was no big deal just stung for a few minutes. The nurses were wowed about the fact I had no bruising and even with the remaining swelling, it looks great. I said I'd post pictures today but I just have no motivation to remove the garment again to take them haha. I promise to do it tomorrow. Or take some later tonight and post them tomorrow at least. Today I woke up with significantly less pain! I love the fact that I seem to be healing so quickly! It doesn't really hurt to go from sitting to standing now, but I still have to use my arms a lot and go slowly to sit. Otherwise I'm doing 95% of things normal paced again. (Other than working out/running of course - no way!) I'm taking a 2 hour drive today out of town so I hope that isn't going to be too uncomfortable as I'll have no one with me to take over. But I'm not worried, I should be a-okay. Nurse said in about a month I should see great improvement. Yayyy!!

*9 days Post-Op*

UUGGGGGHHHHaaarrrg I'm so itchy!! haha, I feel like all my nerves decided to start reconnecting again today bc I've been so itchy all day. After surgery I was pretty much completely numb on my skin and almost over night, half the feeling in my flanks has come back. Swelling is down a bit more too yay! Tried on some old clothes and have to wear a belt with a few jeans - awesome! Too bad I need to go buy a belt now. I'm a-okay with that though.

*2 weeks 3 days Post-Op*

My shape is really looking good now! Still some swelling of course, but I can definitely see the difference. My nerves still fee like they are all coming back to life, so I get random twitches of fiery feeling/itching when I move. I went dancing this past weekend with just my spanx on and was just fine! Of course I couldn't go 100%, but went about 80% and felt okay. The next day I felt a little more sore than usual, but nothing straight up hurt or anything. I had a follow up appt with my surgeon today and I have a bit of dryskin/small scab where stitches were so she said to put some Vaseline on them. I'm hoping by Friday to start putting scar cream on them. I noticed the left side is healing a bit better than the right but nothing significantly noticeable. My friends saw me and said I looked slimmer like I'd been working out I was like ohhhhh thanks, I have been haha. I actually started talking 30-40 min walks and I think at the end of this week I'll start back at the gym. We will see. I'll post 1 month pics when that time comes.

*1 MONTH POST-OP* Finally! 1 month post op...

*1 MONTH POST-OP*

Finally! 1 month post op (well minus 1 day... going out of town tomorrow though). I just love the difference. I would say my swelling is about 85% gone and numbness/pain about 85% gone. I still wear my compression garment most days and spanx everyday. I noticed after one day of not wearing them, I was a little more swollen so I still need them. I think I will continue to wear both for the next 2 weeks or so then my spanx another month. In one of the pictures I posted, you can see that my scars are healing great! I started putting scar cream on them about a week ago 1-2x a day. I have really dry skin a few inches around that area (not sure why) so I put aloe vera on it bc it's natural and heals dry skin. The past week I haven't been eating all that healthy, but trying to keep my portions small to compensate. I started back the healthy eating today though :) But still overall, very happy!!

*5 1/2 weeks Post-Op*

I'd say my sensitivity is 90% gone. Still swollen a little bit, almost like right below my scares theres a little *boop* I can poke and feel the swelling, but nothing noticeable from the naked eye. I keep forgetting to put scar cream on, I only do it like 2-3x a week haha, but the scars are barely noticeable anyways. I mean you can definitely see them, but by the time bikini season rolls back around I'll be fine. I tried running on the treadmill, but still cant get back to my normal pace, the bouncing still kind of hurts. So I stick to bike or elliptical and it doesn't hurt at all :) I do weights as well with no problem. Although I've been off my game with this endless supply of halloween candy floating around! On a side note, I finally had sex the other week (yes I'm talking about it bc no one else does lol!) My husband has been away training that's why I haven't seen him this whole time. And when he grabbed my sides it was a slight twinge, but sparing the details, pain-wise everything was fine! I'm sure it would have been fine about 2 weeks after surgery though. He said I was looking really good, yay! But anyways, I'd say by Thanksgiving I'll be completely fully healed liked nothing every happened, no numbness or anything. I posted a swimsuit comparison pic too.
Raleigh-Durham Plastic Surgeon

She is an excellent doctor with wonderful bedside manner. She answered all my questions, told me she was available 24/7 for any kind of phone calls and the day after surgery the anesthesiologist called to check up on me. It's a small practice so she really takes time with each patient and doesn't operate like a factory. Morning of surgery she even gave me a comforting hug and seemed excited for me. Never made me feel uncomfortable or question what I was doing. A lot of her staff had also had procedures done by her and were more than willing to show me their results and pictures of the other patients. I wish she had some more pictures of the area I was getting lipo done, but I could tell from other area pictures that she would do a good job. Still healing, but love my results so far. The total fee included all costs: lipo area, facility fee, anesthesiologist, etc

What I also notice is that your spine doesn't have that big deep line in it anymore! Mine does that too and I really hope the lipo will soften that for me as well...Seriously...your pics are making me really excited!

OMG! Thank you for your review!!! I am now super excited about getting my flanks done. I am small (5'1 100lbs) but also always have the stupid freakin muffin top at my waist line! pants and undies all cut into the soft fat at hips and flanks and your results look soooooooo great! Thanks for the hope! Only 25 days till sx for me. Can't wait!

You look amazing! I am on Day 4 and am pretty much feeling the same as you. I had inner/outer thigh (just a little), lower abdomen (just a little) and flanks (problem area). I have not taken my compression garment off yet because I am nervous. Did it make you feel dizzy or anything when you took it off?

Congrats, great job Doc Gunn did but I am sure you are very good with your died and work out as you wrote. I had mine 28.12.2012 and am also super happy. Also because I paid 1980 USD for the whole lot (upper lower apps, love handles, chest remodel and chin). Will post some pics soon. Can only recommend India for this as it is price and quality wise amazing and if you club it with a three week vacation which you should also an amazing trip.

How are you feeling now? I feel like ive gone back to normal =/ My PS says its just swelling tho. Im 4 weeks post.
  • Reply
I feel pretty good. Even with swelling I've lost almost 2 inches in my midsection. I get random sporadic pains if i stand/roll over/sit too fast. But I make sure to keep my compression garment on, or at the least my spanx, it helps a lot. My PS said swelling will be there for probably at least another 3 months so I'm sure your swelling will be a lot better then!

You look exactly like you had the same problem I have right now. I don't understand how I can have such a flat stomach but be able to pull a handful of fat off of each of my sides. I'm looking to do something about it next year but have worried about the lumpiness some women have. It looks like you had a good surgeon and took great care of yourself- hope my results look like yours!

Yes, it was very frustrating!! I have a few hard spots but swelling is even more down now and massaging the area definitely helped the area smooth out. I just make sure to always keep my spanx on and that made the area smooth :) Good luck with your future surgery!!
  • Reply
Thanks for the response! Are the hard spots visible or are they just noticeable when you touch them?
  • Reply
No they are not visible, just when I touch them. They aren't all over the area, just in two spots on my sides, like right where the crease in my side would be if I bent over sidways (if that makes sense) lol. It just almost feels like a hard bruise, minus any discoloration. The PS said they should feel them less and less as swelling continues to subside.
