A summary of my experience- Dr. David Martin

I have been waiting to post an official review of my overall experience as there have been many times I have wanted to break down and cry thinking on the fact that I have had to undergo this procedure twice. I will begin by saying, Dr. Martin is very nice. Great besides manner, very kind, warm and friendly. He really is a nice man. That is where the positive things I have to say end. In a statement: he should not be allowed to practice plastic surgery. I choose Dr. Martin after a few consults with other plastic surgeons in the Nashville area. To be completely frank, my decision boiled down to the cost. The entire surgery with Dr. Martin was 13K ( in comparison to the 20 and 22K quotes I had from two other surgeons.) Moral of the story- you get what you pay for.

Initially Dr. Martin told me that implants might not be a good fit for me. However after many consults and lots of research, I knew that I wanted to have them to maintain the round breast shape. I also knew walking in the door that I wanted to have a full tummy tuck, a breast reduction, lift, and implants, as well as lipo of my abdomen and flanks. Dr. Martin agreed to all of the above procedures. We booked a date, proceeded with the surgery, and began the healing process. I will say initially I was pleased with how things were looking (because A) not having the skin skirt hanging from my stomach was a huge plus, B) My implants were still swollen and hadn't settled and C) I didn't know any better). Additionally, Dr. Martin noted in one of my first post up visits that he was pleased with the implants and glad that we went that route.

As things progressed I raised some of my concerns to Dr. Martin- namely that my nipples were uneven and not high enough, that my pubic area protruded through pants and skirts and made me self conscious, and the dog ear on my left hip was unsightly and also protruded through my pants. Dr. Martin assured me that all of these things were normal and that we can go back in and fix them. I eventually agreed to pay for the anesthesia and surgical facility fees again (so as to not attempt to do these procedures in office without anesthesia) to lipo out my hip, abdomen, and pubic area, remove the skin and fat from the dog ear, and to do an internal lift on both breasts.

I began to feel very uneasy and discussed this with several friends that were either Drs, Nurses, or patients that have had this type of work done. All of which pointed to the fact that these procedures were really not going to fix my issues. They make make them better, but would not meet my expectations.

I began to seek consults from other surgeons, knowing that I was looking at shelling out the full amount again. I was truly that unhappy with my results and began to regret ever having the surgery (as I was not only covered in scars, but now that my implants had settled, my breast size went from a full DD to an H!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The goal as stated in my pre-op appointments was a full D). Upon showing my pictures to several plastic surgeons I heard things such as "Holy [RS bleep], who did this (so as to not send patients there," "Who's the butcher," and "Poor thing, how awful." These are things no one should ever have to hear after enduring such a painful surgery and recovery.

I soon cancelled my revision surgery (with absolutely no follow-up from his office as to why) and I booked a revision with Dr. Eshbaugh in Bonita Springs, Florida as my mother is a nurse in a facility he operates out of and has seen the phenomenal work he has done. All I can say is that I wish I had gone to him first. Night and day doesn't even begin to describe the difference. Dr. Eshbaugh ended up having to do a complete revision including removing my implants, reducing the breasts further, fixing the nipple margins (and he made them smaller and more attractive), removing more skin from my stomach, creating a new centered belly button, thinning out my pubic area, and giving me a nice figure with lipo in the flanks.

We consulted with some lawyers and plastic surgery specialists 2 months ago when I was finally feeling recovered and up to doing so. Upon review of the pictures and medical records we were told that there was clear malpractice and poor technique executed. Upon discussion with my husband (and due to the statue of limitations and the timing in which we would have to pursue a lawsuit) we opted to move on and not pursue this option. However I think the fact that we were told we had a clear case speaks volumes. All in all, my advice would be to avoid Dr. Martin at all costs. I think the pictures speak for themselves. I hope that no one has to go through what I went through using Dr. Martin.

11 days PO- still dealing with swell hell

I am not one to sit still. It's become abundantly clear to me as my mom and husband yelled at me to sit down and quit trying to do things. It's almost an instant swelling when I start getting up on my feet and doing things- especially since my PS does not have me in any compression garments. Everything is healing nicely though and I am beyond pleased with how everything is looking!

9 days post op

Healing has been a little bit more difficult this time around- perhaps because I know what to expect. Tomorrow I return to work in the office. I. Am. Terrified. I still have both drains in and am not walking upright yet. I really don't want any questions. My drain output was up yesterday after over doing it. My mom has been in town since I got back helping with my recovery. I was really hoping she could pull my drains for me- but she doesn't think it's a good idea yet since I am supposed to be less than 30ml for over 24 hours. I've yet to be under 30. Sigh. At least my boobs are perky : )
