I'm 51 & had an ortho consult 20 years ago...
- 4 Aug 2011
I'm 51 & had an ortho consult 20 years ago for crowding of top teeth & narrow arch & he told me I needed my palate surgically split pre-orthondontia. I left immediately & never sought another opinion. After putting kids through orthodontia & thinking I wasn't a candidate for braces, I went to get an opinion regarding veneers. That cosmetic dentist told me I was an invisalign candidate. Since I was very familiar with a good orthodontist due to my kids, I went to him for a 2nd opinion. Felt bad ditching the cosmetic dentist, but the Ortho was more reasonably priced and had far more invisalign experience being an elite provider.
So obviously it's too early to post an opinion of invisalign, but will periodically journal. I do feel sort of wimpy b/c my mouth is sore. I'm prone to canker sores anyway & had some by the end of the day yesterday. I hope since I get them easily this does not become probelmatic. The attachments are a real pain (I have 9 of them) and do make it feel as though you're going to pull out your teeth when you remove your trays.
One point however that I would like to make is that Invisalign is far from invisable. My teeth must be on the yellow side b/c my attachments are visibily whiter than my teeth & look like I have curds of cottage cheese on my teeth. Also, my trays have what are called power ridges which give the tray some extra torque I guess & mine are in front & they are visible. It looks like my retainers don't fit properly (in fact,I thought they had cut them short). So in addition to curds of cottage cheese, I have a line running a few millimeters below my gum line that sort of looks like a retainer. So, they are definitely NOT discreet. If that is important to you, I would sure be asking if your treatment plan entails attachments or power ridges. Even so, I prefer this to metal braces.
Great review?

My rating:
Technically I know my ortho is excellent. However, I am very interested in my treatment plan (the more detail the better) and I can tell he's not used to people asking quite so many questions. But he has always politely obliged me & did share with me the clinicheck when I requested.
Sorry to hear it is not as discreet as you had hoped. I'm glad to hear you are confident in the orthodonist though, always nice to know you are in good hands!
If you feel comfortable doing so I'd love to see some pictures of your teeth so we can watch as the change happens. It will be fun when you are all done to see!
