Invisalign is a great alternative to traditional braces, but you HAVE to be a candidate! It works beautifully for basic straightening but if perfection is what you want then go with braces. If your teeth are too out of alignment or if you have major bite issues then it will be a long road with invisalign. You HAVE to be compliant, which means you have to wear them as much as possible. And when your teeth are finally straight you HAVE to wear some type of retainer... FOREVER!!!!!! This is true even with traditional braces, which is why alot of invisalign patients already had braces as children. Your mouth is an ever changing enviornment and teeth are not ridgid in the jaw bone. Biting forces, grinding, clenching (which most af us do even if we dont think we do)shifts teeth a tiny amount on a daily basis. Home care has to be impecable!
If you consume sweet beverages you cant leave the trays in while you drink, you'll get cavities for sure. Im constantly taking them out to drink, then at the very least rinsing with water a few x's before putting them back in. Same goes for food, cant popem back in until after brushing.
The aligners are very comfortable, minimal change with speech. Id highly reccommend them to anyone who needs slight to moderate straightening.
My teeth wont be perfect when im done, but theyll be SIGNIFICANTLY improved, which is a good trade off for not wearing a mouth full of wires. The aligners also double as bleaching trays (which would cost about 300-500)and your dentist should be able to just give you the gel for about 40bucks if not for free. DO IT!!!!!

Sounds like you had very realistic expectations, and you are right being able to use the trays as bleaching trays is certainly a benefit!
