I decided to have smart lipo done after gaining about 25 lbs over a few years. I had never weighed more than 125 lbs my whole life and when that jumped to 150 lbs and gained 4 pant sizes my self esteem was almost non existant.

Day 1: Surgery (Tues)
The surgery took about 2 hours give or take. I had 3 areas done - upper and lower abs and the flanks. (flank is the V look you see on really muscley people). Basically the whole front of my stomach.

They gave me 1 valium and 2 vicodin upon arrival. While it kicked in they started taking my pictures and then preparing my skin (washing, draping and marking the areas to be treated). When they were ready to start I was given another valium.

They told me the worst part would be the numbing of the areas with the tumescent fluid. And they were right! The shots they give you to make the incisions you can barely feel. but once they insert the tool to release the fluid it hurts pretty bad. In most areas it was just a discomfort feeling. For me the worst part was around the rib cage. (they said alot of people say that the rib cage and the belly button area is very sensitive although it wasnt for me). I was given another vicodin to deal with the rib cage pain. Once everything is numb the rest of the procedure is really a breeze. the only time i felt any pain at all is when the tools they were using got close to the areas that were not numb. the laser is the coolest part... you can actually hear the fat cells popping! it sounds like a loud purring sound. so the laser pops the fat cells, liquifying the fat. then, once it is all liquified, he goes in with a suction tool and sucks out all the fat and tumescent fluid. Total amount taken from me was 1400 cc's of tumescent + fat mixture. (about 1 and a half liters.)

After the procedure is finished they put band aids over your incisions with a little neosporin and a large gauze pad over that and the your compression garment. The garment is pretty difficult to get into obviously because its made to be so tight. its also crotchless so underwear go over it making it easy to use the restroom. The leftover fluid in the area drains out for the next 24-48 hours. dont underestimate what they tell you.. you will drain ALOT! its different with everyone but before i had even left the table i had drained through the band aids, the gauze pad, my underwear, an extra gauze pad and my sweat pants. Because its compressed the drainage goes all over the place. the drainage is blood - tinted and i had stains down to my thighs and up to my boobs. they say you can buy maxi pads to soak up the drainage - i recommend getting the Johnson & Johnson Surgical Pads Super Absorbancy for Heavily Draining Wounds. you can find them in the first aid area by the band aids, neosporin and hydrogen peroxide (all of which you'll need).

The first day is uncomfortable. I was so sick from all the meds i couldnt keep anything down for the rest of the day.. which meant i couldnt take anymore meds. trying to sit or stand hurts. sleeping is uncomfortable. i recommend taking tylenol pm or unisom sleep aids otherwise you're in for the most uncomfortable night of your life like i had. changing positions hurts no matter what you do-just sleep on you're back.

Day 2: Day After (Wed)
I slept so stiff my whole body hurt. The straps on the garment made it worse. I found out later that if your garment doesnt roll down you dont have to wear the straps. that alone improved my overall comfort throughout the day and night.
The day after is pretty typical... sitting, standing, bending, moving around in general is uncomfortable. on a scale from 1-10.. 10 being the worst i rated this day a 6. then again i refused to take the full dosage of meds i was given because i was afraid of getting sick again. I ate and took half of a vicodin and even that made me queasy so i didnt take anymore. If meds dont make you sick then day 2 should be fine for you.

You cant take the garment off for 24 hours and the first time you do its almost scary. i felt like without my garment on my guts were going to fall out.. im over a week in and that feeling hasnt gone away.

After i got the garment off i almost cried. the results were amazing. even with all the swelling i could see that pretty much every bit of fat on my stomach was gone! the incisions were tiny and had already started to close.

My nightly routine is this: shower as normal. wash the incisions with antibacterial soap. pat dry with towel and air dry for a few minutes. apply neosporin to the incisions and cover loosely with a band aid.(until the draining stops use a Johnson & Johnson pad over the bandaids). You can only be out of the garment for 2 hours at the max so while you are in the shower have someone spray the garment with hydrogen peroxide. this will remove the blood stains. then was on delicate cycle with cold water to get that peroxide smell out. dry on delicate low air or tumble dry whichever setting you have on your dryer. it has to be completely dry before you put it back on or it will stretch out as you wear it which defeats the purpose.

Getting back into the garment is very difficult the first time. You obviously need help for the first few days.

Day 5: (Sat)
This was the first day the discomfort was almost non existant. I woke up with significantly less back pain so i was sleeping better.

You cant (and wont want to) scrub the areas to get the marker off so the markings are still faint. I still have some numb areas all over. There is slight A-symmetry.. my left side is just slightly smaller than my right. They tell you to expect all of this. I noticed that the skin around my belly button was starting to tighten back up although the skin is still numb.

A piece of advice- even though you may feel fine still take it easy. I ripped one of my incisions back open and it bruised and the pain came back immediately. (notice the bruise by the left incision in my pictures).

Day 7: post op appt
I still have alot of swelling and bruising. I still have numb areas which they said could last weeks to months hopefully it doesnt last that long. I ordered 2 garments and the post op garment is non zippered. the one you go home in is alot easier compared to the new one. its ridiculously tight and without zippers it makes it very difficult to get on. it took both me and my husband a few minutes of literally shoving myself into this thing to finally get into it. but after a couple of days you figure out how to manipulate it and Im now able to do it by myself.

I take 2 advils in the morning and 2 at night and I feel fine. still sore but everyday i improve.

They recommend wearing the garment for two weeks straight with only being out of it for 2 hours at the max. and then keep wearing it up until 6 weeks being in it as much as possible. Its pretty thin so i think that wont be too much of a problem. ill post my weekly pictures : )

The pictures so far my husband has been a little inconsistent and a few are a little blurry but you get the idea.

Updated on 5 May 2011:
Weeks 2-4:
Everyday I get a little better. I've been massaging my little bumps every night. The bumps right above my incisions are going away - one started out about an inch long and about the width of a pencil but now its only about the width of a couple of toothpicks, I can barely feel it. The other started out as the size of a marble and now its only about the size of a small pea. I have other bumps on my stomach but they are still a little sore so i dont really mess with them alot. hopefully here in the next couple of weeks ill be able to start massaging those as well. I still have numb areas but ive started to regain some feeling back. and instead of numbness i feel soreness. I dont like the sensation of anything on my stomach. The garment is the only thing that isnt uncomfortable. I went out a few times without the garment and my shirt and shorts were very uncomfortable on my incisions and stomach. even the fan blowing on my stomach feels uncomfortable. i really hope this passes very soon!
Sleeping in the garment has become very very uncomfortable..and im starting to tolerate it less and less. It makes me feel so super hot that i cant sleep and i wind up taking it off in the middle of the night. when i do take it off laying on my stomach feels very uncomfortable.
At this point theres no more pain.. just a discomfort.

My rating:

I visited and priced many different doctors. The doctor I finally went with was Dr. Mac - He owns 2 seperate practices. He specializes in woman reproduction and health care and eventually got into the smart lipo business through his new mothers wanting their old bodies back. Hes completely board certified in the smart lipo procedure but is not a plastic surgeon. So dont go to him expecting a boob job - he only specilizes in smart lipo. Which in my opinion is better - you know thats all he does so he is still in practice with the procedure. Not like going to someone who does mostly boob jobs and hardly ever lipo. The nurses are very nice and very helpful. The whole experience was very non-stressful. Dr. Mac is sponsored through Final Inches and the price I recieved was during a special that Final Inches was offering ($995 per area, 3 area minimum). I highly recommend this office!

Wow, you look amazing!! I can't believe it was only a week later and you saw that much improvement...it makes me worry about my stomach now!! Then again everyone is different. My flanks keep getting smaller as the weeks go by so I am still very hopeful;) My stomach on the other had is slowly getting smaller. By the way, you got a really good price! He did a great job!!!

I know this isnt about losing weight obviously because fat weighs alot less than muscle... but ive actually gained about 5 pounds in 2 weeks... very discouraging. I guess because i havent been able to start working out again. how does your stomach feel now? mine is still so stiff i feel like if i did any kind of working out i would hurt myself. i stretch my stomach every night but it doesnt seem to be helping that much. it feels like someone super glued a piece of board to my stomach with a string attached and anytime i move it feels like im pulling on the string.. weird way to say it but i didnt know any other way of explaining it.
hope2<3it 20 Apr 2011
I seriously doubt you have gained 5 pounds of fat--it is just the swelling and water/fluid retention. I was told that this will last 4 to 6 weeks and that this is the reason they don't weigh us at our 1 week check up. The nurse said that some people are even 10 pounds heavier. So don't worry about it just try to drink lots of water to help flush the excess fluid out.

My lower abs still feel hard and sore to the touch and I also have weird feelings just as you described in both my stomach and love handles. And yes it is really hard to explain but you did a good job;) I have recently noticed a little lump under my skin below my belly button that feels like a marble sized ball. I have been massaging it in hopes of it going away. I had one near my love handle and it is now getting smaller after massaging it daily. My stomach feels big right now even a bit bigger than before--feels and looks like I am 4 months prego! Hopefully there is still swelling there!!
tbr407 20 Apr 2011
Wow i didnt realize the swelling and water retention lasts that long.. i thought atleast one or the other would be gone by now. guess i want too much too fast haha

ive been massaging my lumps too every night. so let me know when your lumps and numb areas go away. thats the scariest part for me - im worried that my numb areas wont ever regain feeling.
hope2<3it 21 Apr 2011
Yea I didn't think it would last long either. I will be sure to let you know when my numbness goes away. I feel the same way like you in thinking that the numbness will be there forever. I highly doubt that would happen though--I'm just being paranoid!

hi- i have been reading your post and was curious if your lumpiness ever went away. i am 12 weeks post op and have some small lumps. i massage constantly, but dont think it is helping. Just wanting to see if yours are getting better over time......
tbr407 4 May 2011
I have noticed a significant reduction in size of a few.. a couple are still so sore that i dont really get to massage them as much as i think i should so they havent really gone down any. All in all I would say that massaging has worked for me but the results are very little at a time. I use lotion and baby oil to make it easier. Hope this helps!

Thank you for the advice on the maxi pads, I am schedule for my surgery for June 2nd, I'm kind of scare but Its really worth it.
tbr407 11 May 2011
Try the johnson and johnson surgical pads by the band aid section in walmart.. they work better.

Good luck!

Thanks for your write up....I am having a consult with another doctor tomorrow but will definitely check Dr. Mac out...congratulations on your successful procedure.
tbr407 18 May 2011
Everyone in the office is very nice, you wont be dissappointed. : )

Thanks again for the referral. I met with Final Inches (Dr. McWilliams) and am very comfortable with the consultation. The price was very favorable and I have scheduled my procedure for July 7th. Now the mixture of nervousness and excitement has taken over....how are you doing at this time?

Are your lumps completely gone? I am going to schedule regular surgical massages for the weeks proceeding the procedure to help with this.

Thanks again!
tbr407 4 Jun 2011
Some of the lumps have completely gone away but some are still slowly going away.. My nurse (debbie) told me that wearing the compression garment for 3-6 months after the procedure would help with lumos.. i stopped wearing it around 5 1/2 weeks and havent been able to get back in the habit of wearing it.. Let me know how you're doing and if the massages help! i may need to schedule some if they do help alot.
Tex Cyn 4 Jun 2011
thanks...sure will...hey did they make you take your belly ring out? I have a hoop and I was wondering???
tbr407 5 Jun 2011
I took it out just in case.. I dont remember if they told me to or not but i did. i put it back in after... 2 or 3 days maybe?
Tex Cyn 5 Jun 2011
ok...thanks

I just wanted to thank you again for recommending Dr. Mac. I just had mine last thursday and it was an amazing experience. Everyone was so nice (I chronicled my experience on here as well) and I have pain (about an 8) the day after but I still have no bruising and some swelling but I am doing great. I loved everything about that experience and everything about that practitioner and his staff!!!! THANKS AGAIN!
tbr407 11 Jul 2011
I am so glad you liked them! The whole staff is just really great! Focus on getting better now : )

It's September now. How are you doing? Is all as good as you hoped and planned? I was planning to do this but have drug my feet. I'm thinking of abdomen as well as inner thighs and knees. Do you think I should split them into two procedures?
Tex Cyn 15 Sep 2011
I am doing great. I no longer experience swelling or pain but I continue to have a couple of slight dents and some hard spots. It is only now that I am supposed to see improvement and I feel I do. I continue to get 2 abdominal massages weekly and she sees improvement too. I don't have information on anything other than abs (3-parts) but I read somewhere on here where the doctor will only do 3 parts at a time so they likely will split it up. I would prefer to do all at one time as the initial pain and healing would be over more quickly. good luck!

its almost been a year since i had the surgery and im happy to report that the bumps did go away.. a few minor ones i can still feel but i have to really look around for them so its nothing obvious. the scars are what im working on now.. they tell you that it wont take long for them to go away... wrong. mine are just now starting to almost fade away.

Do you think the neosporin helped with scarring? My doc said to just let mine heal but I'm scared to scar do u think I should put neosporin??
tbr407 13 Apr 2012
I'm not sure really. Couldn't hurt I guess. I'm right at a year later and my scars are still visible. Everyone is different but worse case scenario you may have to come to terms with having scars.
Grand Rapids3586 25 Apr 2012
I purchased a bottle of bioCorneum plus spf30 advance scar supervision. I put it on the scars from the smart lipo and also my BA. I can't even find the scars anymore from the lipo, only way I can tell where they are is by the fact that the area is still sore. I am 6 weeks post op. I found this link on line, I however did not pay this much for mine. I think my PS sold it to me for $80. I recommend it also.
