“Gastric Bypass - Jacksonville, FL”
Spent: $0 in Jacksonville, Florida
Posted 31 Jan 2011
I had a Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass in 99. My beginning weight was 240. I immediately lost 60 lbs. After the immediate loss I remained at 180 till 2008. With alot of hard work I was able to loose to 140. However, I developed 2 hernias and due to lack of medical insurance have not been able to get them repaired. The weight came back on quickly and I am back at 165. I will be a tummy tuck and hernia repair in March so I will be able to workout again.
For those that have problems such as PCOS or infertility, having the bypass helped alot. My first child was conceived prior to the bypass with fertility drugs. 8 years later after bypass I conceived naturally and then again at the age of 45 I conceived again. I am thankful for my little surprises!
The only complication I have had is an infected incision which left a horrible scar. (That is getting fixed in March too!)
PLEASE pay attention to what your Dr. says. No sodas, No alcohol. In my case I did not drink for many years and my recent weight gain is a result of drinking alcohol.
In addition, I was told that many people that go through this end up in divorce because it changes your life so much. In my case that did happen after 23 years marriage, however it was the best thing that ever happened to me.
After having 12 other surgeries, I have to admit the pain was severe. I think they have come along way since then with the new Laprscopic surgeries so this may not apply anymore. The 12 inch open incision was also difficult to deal with. I am a trooper when it comes to pain but it was not easy. Back to work in 2 weeks.
Would I do it again and choose over the lapband? YES

Wow, you've lost a lot of weight and done a lot of hard work, which looks like it's paying off for you. Congratulations.
I'd love to see a before/after picture if you have any and feel like sharing!
