I am only three weeks post op, but wanted to set...
I am only three weeks post op, but wanted to set up a RealSelf account to share my elation with my results thus far. I can't imagine a more wonderful doctor and team and my results have been stellar. Upon signing on to the doctor's page, I saw a review that I replied to, and that reply encompassed most of my story. What it failed to mention is that after losing roughly 100 pounds in the past two years, my 43 year old body looked wonderful in clothes, but was marred by sagging skin that exercise could not remedy. I was not happy with my mid section when the clothes came off. I will add pictures to this review when able, as the results have been amazing and pictures are worth a thousand words. What I can tell you is approximately 11 pounds of skin/fat was removed during surgery.
Another thing that my below tale does not mention, and I have no way of understanding or accounting for it, but my recovery has been astounding. Every person that I speak to tells me that they cannot believe that I have undergone such extensive surgery and walked away looking and feeling so good so fast. It is unlike anything they have observed with other surgeons. It is also unlike anything I have seen in viewing pictures and reading stories shared by others. I was ready to be back to work full time in less than three weeks. I am in a bikini only 21 days out. I am filled with excitement to see what my body will look like three months from now, and to then embark on phase two of this process, which will be when the liposuction and body conturing happen. Truth be told, I am so happy RIGHT NOW. The doctor and his team are the ones who excite me about the next step, and the cost of that was already included in my procedure, so it is NOT manufactured enthusiasm to sell surgery. It is quite the contrary, yet I swear they are counting down the days because they are so happy and excited for me and want to see me on the other side. Dr. Schlesinger is so positive and so solution focused. He is ever reassuring. He has treated me with exceptional care and he and his team have been as excited for me as though it were their own transformations awaiting on the horizon. Their standards are impossibly high and I love that about them. They dreamed more for me than I dared to dream for myself.
Dr. Schlesinger has numerous achievements and many years of experience under his belt. I knew that I would be hard pressed to find another surgeon even coming close to his caliber of excellence, who also demonstrated warmth, wit, compassion and sensitivity toward their patients. I encountered a humble, down to earth man who spent time with me and never ONCE tried to infer that I was inferior in my current state or to body shame me etc. He simply provided me with his professional opinion with regard to what procedures would best give me the results that I was hoping for. The consultation was free and I was not even contacted or pressured after the same. I reached out to the doctor's office and shared that I had such a positive experience with Dr. Schlesinger, KNEW he was who I wanted to have surgery with (the best of the best), but that I have modest means and was wondering if there was any way that I might receive a price reduction in order for me to determine if the surgery would be attainable for me. Dr. Schlesinger's office worked with me to find a way to offer me a discount. Although my heart and gut told me differently, the cynical part of me couldn't help but wonder if I would be treated any differently because the practice would be seeing less of a profit from my surgery. I couldn't have been more wrong!
I was treated like a dear friend by each and every member of the staff that I encountered. Jenna literally held my hand during my first post op visit, and attended to each and every question that came to mind and responded as though she is never off the clock. The doctor called me personally several times and showed a dedication to my care and recovery unlike anything that I have ever experienced previously. A great example is the doctor insisting to come in to his office to meet me on a weekend evening despite the fact that he was just landing from a return trip working on Maui. I was not requesting this after hours appointment and none of my countless follow up appointments are even billed! It is just how invested he is in the BEST attainable results and patient satisfaction PERIOD. Dr. Schlesinger noticed a small, faint line going down the bottom of my belly button and wanted to look at it in person. Upon inspection he let me know that the worse case scenario would be that it could result in a scar. I let the doctor know that I was already blown away by my results and that he had met his goal and had indeed DAZZLED me with my results even a few days out. I told him that I would be fine with a small scar on my belly button. I am a 43 year old woman with stretch marks and other scars. However, even though I would have been okay with the worst case scenario, the doctor wanted to avoid a scar at all costs because he wanted beautiful results for me. HE viewed and treated my body as a work of art and it was evident that he takes great pride in his work and will not settle for anything less than as close to perfection as can be obtained. Dr. Schlesinger advised me that he had seen hyperbaric oxygen therapy prove very effective and told me that if I was able to remain on island to obtain this treatment, that he would like to provide the same to me. Having been familiar with how substantially costly these treatments are, I was floored, humbled and deeply touched when he assured me that these treatments (which ended up being twice daily for a solid week), would be paid for by him! Instead of looking to save a large sum of money, he sent me back for just one more treatment that could be squeezed in prior to my leaving the island, even though I had already likely received maximum results and could't have been happier.
From the big things as mentioned above, to the little things like providing DMSO spray, iodine ointment, belly pads, gauze etc all free of charge, this practice has been exceedingly kind and generous. It would have been so very easy and justifiable to have been nickeled and dimed to the tune of thousands of dollars, but that is just not the way that this practice operates. You never go hungry or thirsty while at an appointment, the vast majority of follow up care is included in your quote and the follow up is extensive! I believe I saw the doctor personally no less than six times before leaving the island to continue my recovery at home, and then saw him two days later in Kona upon returning home. Again, it was not because I was a needy patient who was requesting all of this face time with a busy surgeon, it was because Dr. Schlesinger is meticulous, committed and passionate about what he does. HE really cares that much. I asked the girls in the office (who feel like old friends), "will I still need to go to Kona on Tuesday since it is two days from now and I am seeing him today?" The answer was "Yes, I am sure he will want to see you with his own eyes again to make sure you are doing great and have no questions or concerns". They were right. Having personally worked in the law for many years, I know about billable hours and I know that time is money. Well, all the time and attention that is lavished on the patients fortunate enough to receive care under Dr. Schlesinger's hand is mind boggling from a business perspective. It is incredibly generous.
Dr. Schlesinger is one of the kindest and most generous skilled professionals that I have ever been so blessed to have encountered. I could't recommend a doctor more whole heartedly and I couldn't imagine any other surgeon having given me the gorgeous results that he crafted. He is a five star surgeon who has treated me like a VIP from day one!
