My tummy tuck experience was ok. I had a big bulge after 3 pregnancies and the doctor told me I had ventral abdominal wall hernia. I am fine with everything except, I am concerned about having a foreign substance (i.e. mesh) in my body and worried that the sutures might break.

I had an ventral abdominal wall hernia repair plus tummy tuck. My separation was 3.5 inches and my doctor said it was necessary to use a mesh onlay over the belly button to reinforce the area. Looking at my surgery pictures, it seems that the doctor did not use interrupted stiches. It seems after doing some research that a mesh is not always necessary. Is the mesh safe? The doctor told me that tissues will grow and it will become part of my body. Why was a mesh necessary? Could he have reinforced the area by using different type of suture (such as interrupted sutures)?

Mesh is commonly used for hernia repair. It is now considered the norm. Used on inguinal, ventral, umbilical or incisional hernias alike. It is quite safe and routinely placed with a continuous, uninterrupted, unabsorbable stitch. I have been a nurse in surgery for nearly 30 years so have alot of exposure to these types of procedures. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply. It helps and makes me less worried. Would you know the difference between ventral abdominal wall hernia and diastasis recti? It seems that for DR, a mesh is not used. I don't understand the difference between the two. I had a wide separation of the muscles after 3 pregnancies.
