Losing More Lashes when Starting Latisse? - Chicago, IL

I have been using Latisse for two weeks now. I've noticed that I've been losing more lashes than usual. I'm hoping this is because the faster growing cycle is pushing out these week lashes to make room for stronger lashes to emerge. Is that possible. I hope its not just wishful thinking. Please let me know if you've seen this result before. Thanks so much. Stella

My Doctor: name not provided

I am only two weeks into the treatment so I don't know if it will be successful or not or if it matters which Doctor prescribes Latisse. I'm just concerned about my initial results of this product. Some of the questions really don't apply to my situation.

Stella, how many lashes would you say you're losing? If it's just several a day, I would say yes, that's fairly common and thought to be (as you say) due to the newer lashes pushing the older ones out of the way. Makes sense, when you remember that Latisse partly works by accelerating lash growth. I would suggest you stop usage for a few days to slow down the lash loss that disturbs you, and then recommence - perhaps every other night OR make sure you are using the tiniest amount if you do it nightly. Use a fine eye/lip liner brush rather than the Latisse applicators (which many discard because they say they are too bulky to use and appear to waste product). So, don't lose heart. Slow down - but consider keeping going! Hope this is of some help to you...

Thank you Nipchick and Aphrodite, Both your messages are encouraging. I have another "odd" question. I, rather than having a dark line along my lash line, have a very, very slight raised lighter colored line along my lashes. I only see it when looking in my magnifying mirror. No pain or burning. Once again, I'm hoping it is because my new incredible lashes are "brewing" under the skin and are going to pop out soon. As you can tell I am so hurting for new lashes. I just turned fifty and I've ruined my natural ones through abuse of makeup, dyeing, perming, using lash-curlers-hot and reguar, fake lashes, etc. I've been much gentler in the last year or so, but the damage was done- or so it seemed until I heard about Latisse. At this point I don't want to bother with all those time consuming, damaging products or procedures but really want good lashes to frame my eyes. With some people mascara isn't a must, but I think my most important cosmetic thing is making my lashes look good. It makes a huge difference on me. The other areas aren't really a huge concern. Lashes make me look younger and much more awake. I'll really give this product a big, long chance before giving up on it. Nipchick, I did switch brushes, am applying less and have noticed a slow down in lash loss (along with total disappearance of the slight redness that was periodically on the whites of my eyes.) Aphrodite, I read on one of your past comments to someone else about latisse growing curly lashes. I would LOVE that! Mine are stick straight and sometimes dangle downward. I hadn't heard of or read that before. I totally get what you're saying about your brows, though. I have the same thing. I'm not going to touch my brows until I know that this works on my lashes, though. At my age, I can't afford to lose any more brow hairs. Thank you both for all the info. Stella
nipchick 27 May 2009
Stella, you're welcome. I'm glad your lashes loss has slowed down and the redness has eased. I think I notice the same thing on my lashline almost of a slight swelling effect but no darkening or redness. I too, think it's probably due to swelling/ripening of the follicles and contents (my long awaited lush lashes!). You're not alone in wanting to cut down on mascara and all the other things. I don't like the feel of mascara (nor the look) and hope to just be able to tint my lashes black every month or so and leave them (apart from maybe some clear conditioning mascara/conditioner - castor oil looks great, provided you're not wearing eyeliner, that is!). Aphrodite is perfectly correct to mention increase in eyelash curl with Latisse/Lumigan (we use Lumigan = same thing but cheaper). I haven't reached that yet, but have read about curly wurly's many times!! Hugs p.s. Hey, I'm not so far from you in age, either! Hope you're pleased eventually (well, hope we all are...). p.p.s. I forgot to add that my brows are really responding well to the Lumigan. I can clearly see the shape emerging that I had in my 20's - and I'm especially thrilled to see those inner corners (which had frozen in the plucked chicken mode for a number of years!) filling in. Just to let you know...

I'm 53 and my once long and beautiful eyelashes are now short and thin. From what I understand, it's mainly because of hormone changes in our bodies, stress and makeup abuse. However, since I don't use makeup that often, I'm certain it's my hormones, at the same time it effects your weight and waist line. Oh yeah and grey hair, also thin hair all over, including arm and legs now growing on my chin yuk!!! the only plus is no menstruation. I started using Latisse 5 weeks ago and seemed to have a lot of shedding the first 3 weeks. Although I saw new growth, I panic and bought Lilash, and used both one in the morning and the other at night. I don't know if it's a coincident but the shedding stopped almost immediately, and I now see a lot of new growth. I just wanted to share, also, Good luck.. JacQ

My bald eyelids (okay, NEARLY bald)have been a disappointment all my life. So I am going into my fourth week with Latisse and waiting to exhale. So far, alas,no difference. I'll keep going until the first $120 bottle is used up. Do y'all think I will see results in week 5 or 6?
nipchick 28 May 2009
I need to know what you mean by bald, Alabamagal. Are we talking literally nearly bald? And have you looked at the Dr Q&A section to see if anyone has posted a similar question?
Alabamagal 29 May 2009
By nearly bald I mean very sparse, very fine and very short. I can see lashes in a strong magnifying mirror, but if you were standing next to me, you could not. Does that explain it? I'll keep applying the Latisse and will post an update in another month. 'Bamagal
nipchick 29 May 2009
Aha, so you do have lashes and therefore active follicles. I think you WILL get a result, because on the Dr Q&A page, one Dr answers a similar query by stating that if the person concerned has NEVER had lashes, from birth, than Latisse probably wouldn't work. Therefore, if you DO have them (even if they are tiny and sparse) I am going to that you WILL get a result AND you'll either get one pretty quickly because your follicles will respond hungrily (!) OR you'll get results, but will take a bit longer than most other people. Either way, I suggest you take it AT LEAST to the 8 week mark, as Latisse site states (in their own Q&A section) that results are to be expected from 8 weeks onwards. I am suprised that some people are talking about seeing results as quick as 2-4 weeks, but still... I'm at 8 weeks now myself, and it's all going along quite slowly. Good luck!

Hi Alabamagal, There's another person on RealSelf who is in a similar situation. Here's a link to her question (one answer so far): Latisse for bald eyelids? From the people I've talked to, I don't know anyone who has noticeable results in week 5-6. But if you have almost no eyelashes, perhaps you'll see results sooner since you're going from "nothing" to "something"? Just a guess.

Nipchick and Aphrodite I hope you are able to view this question. Apparantly, I don't "get" how to communicate on this site. I seem to be getting answers from questions other than mine LOL - its okay, though- the more info the better. In addition I'm having problems finding some of the past comments or links to track people with similar issues. Anyway......... I know the two of you started at least three weeks before me and was wondering if you see any results yet. It's been a little over a month now and I am still consistant with my Latisse use but haven't seen any results yet. The two of you must be getting close to that half-way eight week marker. Anything starting? Please let me know. My fingers are crossed. Thanks so much. Stella

Hi Stella, yes, this site has gone a little wonky over the last day or so. Our pics are gone, and if you hadn't signed your post as 'Stella' I wouldn't have known who you were! Also, posts seem to be muddled up, I think... Anyway, to answer your question, yes, I'm halfway through my 8th week, and feel I am only just beginning to see a few signs of obvious growth. Did you know that I had a shedding of 12 lashes from the right eye over a 2-3 day period? That was scarey, but seems to have settled now. So yes, some progress - but nothing really startling yet. Don't worry. You have a little further to go I think, before you'll be saying 'aha, I think something's happening!'. I have a few that are longer than the rest, and like a lot of other people, I find that some of them grow out at weird angles! My eyebrows are filling in quite well and just over the last few days I notice that some of the hairs are jet black - so, that's some black amid the brown! Interesting, because my lashes are darkish but not yet as dark as I would like. I'm hoping that I might arrive at some startlingly black lashes (even a few would be fun) over the next few weeks. Seriously, I think I'm just entering into one of the most interesting months (the 3rd) in the Lumigan experience. I say this because many who've gone ahead of me seem to really hit shock lashes around the 10-12 week mark. If not, and I have to wait until 16 weeks - so be it! Keep on keeping on! I certainly intend to do so... Hugs, Nipchick

Hey can anyone tell me about the products reaction for someone who has Blepharitis. I would love to have lashes again. I have been using false lashes for about three years now. I do well with them but getting wet or sweating in public is always a scare. I panic when I think they are falling off. Would love to hear from someone about this. Thanks!
Annon 15 Feb 2010
Hi! Could you tell me which false eyelashes you use? I want to find some that are not irritating. I have the same condition and have lost a lot of lashes recently.
nipchick 12 Jun 2009
Simple, I would look in the doctor Q & A section, to see if this has already been asked. As a layperson, I read that with blepharitus, you have have to keep your eyelids clean, softened and clear of debris, and might be using ointments. Correct? If your lashline is so prone to irritation, it may be difficult (but not impossible) to use Latisse/Lumigan. I would ask your doctor's advice - and failing that, you might be able to try the Latisse on the once daily basis after having bathed and soothed your lids thoroughly. Don't mix any eye ointments with your Latisse application - maybe use them at the opposite end of the day. The problem is that some people get redness/irritation from Latisse alone - which usually passes. But it would be a shame if you worsened your condition. At the end of the day, it's up to you. If you are careful to apply to well prepared lids and to use a very small amount of Latisse - it might, just might give you some lashes again. But that's only my opinion, and I'm not a doctor/chemist! Good luck.

I am an optometrist and use the prescription drug Lumigan along with other prostaglandins to treat glaucoma,(increased intra-ocular pressure) Latisse is the same concentration as the prescription drug. You should not expect miraculous results in just a few short weeks. Most of my patients have been using this group of drugs once daily for many years and experience as a side effect, longer, thicker, and darker lashes. This side effect, which was appreciated by most patients is the reason Allergan seeked FDA approval for eyelash growth.

I recently tried Neulash ($150), which I bought from Saks Fifth Avenue. A friend of mine had great results so I figured why not since you can return the product if you have any problems. I used it for only a week because my eyes were so bloodshot and dry. Needless to say I returned it right away. A few days ago I decided to give Latisse a go since it was recommended by my dermatologist. It seems too early for me to complain since I just started last night, but I am already experiencing the same dry eyes and redness that eye drops can't seem to take care of. Do these symptoms subside with continued use or will I have to endure this for long, thick lashes? I don't thing I can take it if so, but I hate to throw $120 away. I sure wish there was a return policy! Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)
Alabamagal 18 Jun 2009
The package insert on Latisse and Lumigan says there is that chance of a side effect. A certain percentage of users get red itchy or puffy eyes. I would say that your eyes are telling you that they don't like bimatoprost or one of the preservatives in the solution. If you have a friend who wants to use Latisse, you could offer her your barely-used bottle at a discount. Meanwhile, my Lumigan has arrived from India, and woohoo! It cost $37 as opposed to the $120 at the MedSpa here. I am a believer in online shopping, let me tell you.

Stella, I'm hoping by now you have stuck with Latisse and love it as I do. I too lost many lashes the 1st 2 weeks of use and I really couldn't spare any! But I've stayed with the program and have had fantastic results. I've actually had to pull two lashes that were too long and grew down and refused to curl. My new lashes curl easily with just using mascara. To avoid waste I use a fine eyeliner brush to apply the product. Also, I've ordered the Lumigan from India to save even more money on these great lashes. I'm 63 and now have the best eyelashes of my life! My co-workers have ordered together so to split the shipping cost from India. If you're really happy now and want info on how to order Lumigan check out the postings from rosieposie on this site. Good luck

Hi Beans, I just started using Latisse 12 days ago(started June 10, 2009) and have been losing lashes alittle more than usual. I am glad to hear that you stuck with it and are happy with your results. Thank you for the encouragement by posting your ad.

Hi I just started using Latisse on June 10, 2009 (11 days ago)and I am noticing that I am losing/shedding more eyelashes than usual especially on my lower eyelid lashes. Yesterday I lost 2 eyelashes on my left eye and today on my left eye I lost about 4. Also today I lost 2 eyelashes on both of my top eyelids. I use Latisse everynite and have had no bad reactions to it other than maybe alittle eye itching. Maybe the eyelashes are falling out because I am rubbing my eyes due to the itching. I thought about appling the Rx every other nite and see what happens but haven't done so yet. I want longer fuller lashes. Has anyone gotten good results from Latisse, after losing/shedding their eyelashes in the beginning?
Sharon at RealSelf (Community Manager) 23 Jun 2009

Hi Camry2007,

Once you've got an idea of how Latisse is working for you, would you please consider writing a review to share your experience? I've heard of a few people who have lost eyelashes during treatment and your insights would really help.

Thanks!
--Sharon
