Could The Pearl Laser Be Kate Somerville's Hot New Treatment?
Beverly Hills skin care guru to the stars Kate Somerville was featured on EXTRA treating a patient with the Pearl laser.
A UV photography skin analysis of Kate's patient shows that after treatment, brown spots were reduced by 40%. At the end Kate says, "A Pearl treatment smoothes the skin, just like a pearl."
Somerville's website says the Pearl laser "combines the impact of resurfacing lasers with the gentleness and safety of non-invasive procedures to treat aging and sun-damaged skin."
The publicity for Pearl coincides with the launch of Cutera's new Pearl Fractional, an ablative laser designed to treat sun damaged and wrinkled skin in one treatment, according to a company press release.

Knoxville Dermatologist Rescues Model's Sun-Damaged Skin With Fraxel
Model Dora Cooper recently underwent Fraxel Laser treatment at a Knoxville dermatologist's office. The 46-year old model, who confessed to WBIR News in Knoxville that she had always been a sun worshipper, began to notice some fine lines and wrinkles.
After seeing a segment on the Today show that featured the Fraxel Laser treatment, Cooper turned to Dermatology Associates in Farragut, TN, where she began a four-month series of treaments to her face, neck, chest and hands.

Boynton Beach Plastic Surgeon Pleads Guilty, Takes 2 Year Sentence
A Florida plastic surgeon who once threw a T-shirt contest with free breast implants as the prize is taking a plea deal for 2 years in prison to avoid a trial.
Mark Schreiber's medical license was first suspended in 1999, and again in 2006 as he faced lawsuits and criminal charges for the deaths of two patients. Schreiber continued to see patients for follow up after his license was suspended.
He will serve 2 years in prison and now owes $15,000 fines to four women who say he botched their breast, lip, and eye surgeries.

Houston Plastic Surgeon Morphs Patient Photos To Show "After" Before Surgery
Houston plastic surgeon Paul Vitenas relies heavily on his digital camera during patient consultations. His patients used to only see before and after photos of other people, but now they can see their own with the help of new 3D imaging software.
Dr. Vitenas explained to Fox News that this new 3D imaging software is especially helpful for consultation for face, cheek, and neck surgery. He shoots pictures of the patient's profile and downloads the photos into software that shows the patient what they will look like after surgery.

Downtown Toronto Building Boom Includes Medical Spa And Dental Implant Specialist
CNN Money is reporting that Infinity Medical Group (IMGR) has received building permits for a new medical spa and a dental implants clinic at 18 Yonge Street in downtown Toronto.
The project is located in a commercial retail space on the ground level of a 39 story condominium complex, adjacent to several key downtown Toronto landmarks, such as Union Station, Air Canada Centre, the Financial District and the 48 story Maple Leaf Square Condominium Complex.
New condo sales in the city went up 45.7 percent in 2007, mostly from a baby boomer demographic, and that's what Infinity Medical Group hopes to capitalize on by introducing their clinics to the booming area.

Utah Dermatologist And Staff In Fatal Plane Crash
A Utah dermatologist and his staff from Red Canyon Aesthetics & Medical Spa, whose headquarters are in Cedar City Utah, were on a twin engine plane that crashed Friday, killing all ten people on board.
The director, Dr. Lansing Ellsworth, had recently launched a monthly dermatology clinic in Moab, offering skin cancer screenings and other dermatology work. Other victims of the crash included clinic workers (two of them students of Southern Utah University) and the pilot.
The company has 7 clinics in Utah, 2 in Nevada and one in Arizona.

Greensboro Medical Spa Owner Charged With Fraud, Allegedly Injected Non-FDA Approved Silskin
A Greensboro, North Carolina medical spa owner has been charged with 20 counts of felony fraud for using another doctor's name to obtain prescription drugs.
Winston-Salem television station WXII reported that last January, Lauretta Cheek was charged with a misdemeanor after three of her customers reported serious medical conditions (including kidney failure) as a result of cosmetic injections they received at her spa.

Columbus Plastic Surgeon's Initiative Allows Nurses To Administer Botox
When a Columbus, Ohio plastic surgeon argued to the Ohio Board of Nursing, that "in a well supervised environment, it is safe [for nurses] to administer these Botox injections," only then did the board realize that there were no established guidelines or prohibitions for administration of injectables.
Dr. Fernando Colon's request to the Ohio Medical Board, which was submitted last year, sparked intense discussion in the state's cosmetic medicine community, according to an article in the Columbus Dispatch.

FDA Sends Doctors To Jail For Illegal Botox Distribution
FDA investigations that began back in 2004 have resulted in several nationwide convictions with prison sentences, including cosmetic physicians who used the illegal Botox in Houston, New Jersey, Boise, Tigard, Salem, and Albuquerque.
The inquiry was launched after four Florida patients were hospitalized with severe botulism poisoning after being injected with illegal botulinum toxin passed off as Botox Cosmetic. The effects reported by these patients; conditions like temporary paralysis, drew the attention of the FDA's office of criminal investigations, who traced the drug to a California lab involved with botulinum toxin research.
