Although I'm not familiar with the cost of clothing actually marketed as "sun protection", I would assume that it may not be affordable or feasible for many families. In any event, all types of clothing can offer some protection from sun exposure. Make certain that the weave is tight - meaning that you when you hold the fabric up to the sun, you don't see sun light coming through. Wearing a broad-brimmed hat when outside for an extended period of time is an excellent practice. Most importantly, wear daily sunscreen (SPF 30). Pay attention to HOW you wear the sunscreen to make it the most effective. Use enough and re-apply every 2 hours while outside or sweating, water sports, etc.
Consider even wearing the sunscreen under your shirt if it is thin fabric and you will be outside. Don't forget sunscreen for your hands and chests!

Applying sunscreen is only one solution against the sun’s harmful and cancer causing UV Rays.

UV Sun Protective Clothing and Swimwear is actually a better solution in that you don't need to reapply sunscreen, the protection is continuous, and such clothing can be worn whenever you have an outdoor activity.

Just one severe burn before the age of 17 can double your chances of getting some sort of skin cancer when you are an adult. This underscores the importance to cover our children in sun protective clothing/swimwear whenever they are in the sun and at a very early age.
