Melasma can effect anyone. However, it tends to effect women 9 times more commonly than men and typically appears on the face. Darker-skinned individuals/races are more prone to this condition.
However, it is commonly linked to oral contraceptive use and or preganancy.
It can be made worse by sun exposure or any skin inflammatory condition, and this should be avoided in susceptible individuals.
