Which is best for butt bulges, Liposuction or Smart Lipo?

Is there anyone else out there who has a butt under their butt? Which procedure would be best for my problem, Liposuction or Smart Lipo? Please help!

A: Microcanula liposuction almost always helps in this area.

David Hansen, MD

The double butt look can be due to excessive fat above the butt crease and causing the butt to sag a lot or to excessive fat below the crease on the posterior proximal thigh (banana deformity). Either way you need to have that fat removed and the microcanulas tend to get some skin retraction that the old... more

A: Smartest lipo requires judgment

Richard Baxter, MD

This is a trickier area than it would seem. The fat layer on the upper part of the back of the thigh helps to hold up the buttock above, like a column. If it is removed, there may be a worsening of sagging. A lot of experience is required to really get this right. Methods to enhance skin tightening with lipo,... more

A: Yes, it is rather common

This is a good question.  It is always good to research and to gain knowledge. It is not uncommon to have a bulge under ones butt. As you probably figured out, exercise usually can not reduce the bulge.  The reason for this is that is where many women store their fat.  So the only true and... more

MPX Smart Lipo can be a very effective to melt and remove the mostly superficial fat (and sometimes deep fat ) in the "banana roll" located below the gluteal fold. However, it should be reserved for those very experienced using this new technology. Unlike traditional liposuction which must avoid the so-called "sacred centimeter" of fat just below the dermis, the MPX Smart Lipo laser fiber can be used directly against the dermis melting superficial fat, freeing subdermal connections without damaging the blood and nerve supply to the skin, and heating the skin safely to 38-40 degrees centigrade. This provides far more heat then external sources like Thermage can offer leading to potentially more collagen stimulation and skin tightening. Because MPX Smart Lipo is new, clinical studies about tightening are pending, but as someone who uses Smart Lipo every day, my experience is that the skin tightening with this modality is superior to others on the market today. Hope that helps.

The area you are referring to is known as "banana roll" or the extra fatty tissue collected under the buttocks.  This area is commonly seen in females with various degreee of severity.  Agressive removal of fat from this area can weaken the support for the buttocks and result in sagging. Traditional or the old fashion liposuction is still the safest and the best way to remove fat.  Some of the new methods and technique are effective but have new set of risks and complications.

The butt under the butt (aka banana roll) is a common trouble spot people complain about.  As it is a small area of fat (despite what one thinks!), it can usually be treated quite well with either the SmartLipo procedure or with tumescent liposuction.  Just make sure that the gluteal fold (aka butt fold) is not altered as this can lead to a loss of transition between the buttock and the posterior thigh.  You still want to have some meat above the thigh area that is "tented up" by the connective tissue in the buttock region so that you retain a nice shape.  Either procedure should be able to be performed with good results.
