When to start treating wrinkles and age spots?

I am noticing age spots cropping up on my cheeks, chest, and shoulders.  Also my skin is thinning, and fine wrinkles criss-cross my face.

What am I doing about this skin damage?  I'm trying lots of wrinkle creams and fade creams. Notthing yet at the dermatologist.  Should I stop waiting around and do something now?  Why (or why not?)

I saw your question and how this comment from our Charlotte paper was potentially helpful: "Skin-care concerns and needs are not really age dependent. Skin care is simply about taking care of the skin, either to prevent problems from occurring or to treat problems after they have occurred. Despite the way cosmetics companies segment skin-care needs into age groups, skin-care needs are relatively universal. Basically, skin needs to be clean and protected from the sun and environment. When skin-care problems show up, regardless of age, whether it's cradle cap, diaper rash, redness, dryness, wrinkles or oily areas, you treat the condition. How you treat the condition is critical. Sensible, proven battle plans (sometimes including medical attention) and well-formulated products are essential for success."

Count yourself as lucky if you do not have signs of aging on your face at age 35. I would not sit back and wait for it to happen.

Make sure that you do things to prevent sun damage. Always wear SPF. Your SPF should be a strength of 15 or higher with UVA and UVB protection. Clean your face daily just as you do your teeth. Remove your makeup at night. Moisturize. Nothing makes your face look older than skin that is dry and flakey.

I swear by ultrasound facial treatments for prevention and improving skin conditions such as dehydrated skin, lifeless skin, enlarged pores, acne, fine lines and wrinkles. Ultrasound works in the deeper layer of the skin increasing collagen production, elastin, drawing moisture from the deeper layer to the surface, increasing bloodcirculation and cell metabolism (absorption of nutrients and elimination of toxins), sonophoresis (allowing skincare products to penetrate making them much more effective) I have great results with my ultrasound unit, but be aware - not all units are created equal.

Good healthy diet, sun block and no smoking will all help your skin age well. By the time you are 60 you will see some sagging, jowls. Other than that you should be able to keep looking pretty youthful. Also, a little weight in the face helps keep it younger looking. Zsa Zsa Gabor or Sophia Loren (not sure which one) said at some point you have to choose between your butt and your face. Only one can be thin and look good.
