When is It Really Advisable to Get a Cover Up Tattoo After Laser Treatment Begins?

There seems to be many varying accounts about how soon after laser tattoo treatment a cover up can begin. Some people say 6-8weeks some 3 months some up to a year? What is the conventional wisdom? On a side note, is the sole reason for the waiting period to allow skin to heal from the trauma of the laser? Because some people have told me that ink subsequently applied would fade due to the laser continuing to attack it? but this doesn't seem to make much medical sense? Many thanks in advance
