Use prescription-strength topical antioxidants and collagen builders

Certainly there are many keys to looking healthy and beautiful – diet, exercise, vitamin and mineral supplementation, relaxation and stress-reducing activities, etc. As a dermatologist, we have a few critical items in our medical bag that are often overlooked but should be incorporated into everyone’s skin care – for example, topical antioxidants and collagen builders are an integral part of a good skin care regimen and should be the starting point for every person who wants to improve skin health and beauty.

There are many prescription-based antioxidants that have been clinically tested for well over 10 years, and clinical research provides proof of their valuable effects. Summarily, don’t deplete your pocketbook by purchasing over-the-counter anti-aging products and skin enhancers that may not work; instead, ask your dermatologist for prescription-based, medical antioxidants, anti-wrinkle treatments, and collagen builders that have worked successfully for many years.

Physical and mental health are key

  • Exercise at least 4 days a week–I don’t mean 5 minutes on the treadmill. At least a good 75 minutes with weights and cardio for weight control and to tighten sagging stomachs and wobbling triceps.
  • Eat raw or steamed vegetables, brown rice, and less of spicy food! Spicy or high sugar foods stimulate the inflammation process which can exacerbate skin conditions such as Ezcema, Psoriasis or Dermatitis.
  • Weekly psychotherapy visits is not a bad idea!! Beauty comes from the core of your being.

Good food, privacy, and confidence

Beauty comes from deep within. A proper eating regime of healthy, nutritious foods will show in all ways – in all places. From the top of your head, to the bottom of your feet, the day is a living example of what you eat.

I believe that scheduling in 'private time' on a daily basis is what the good life is all about. The coveted 'alone time' is a great way to rediscover your wonderful uniqueness.

My #1 anti-ager – is confidence. Confidence is smart, sexy, and sassy. We must learn to shine with our confidence; only then will everyone totally believe that we are not only gorgeous, but younger than our years. Strut your stuff – confidently!

Go back to the healthy rules of your childhood

Basically, go back to the rules of your childhood: eat your vegetables, go outside and play, take naps, get a puppy, hug everyone and laugh as much as you can! As we age we realize (hopefully) that we are such multi-faceted beings, we can't just take one approach to looking and feeling good.

  • Certainly eating a healthy diet is important - fruits and veggies give us the vitamins we need to keep our systems healthy and regular
  • Exercise, in whatever form you enjoy, is also important. Not everyone likes to push (herself) by entering the NY Marathon. I prefer yoga and walking
  • Most of all, finding balance and peace in your life, and surround yourself with people you love and things that make you happy (in my opinion) will keep you looking and feeling great
  • Do things for others (volunteer)
  • Cultivate your spirituality (whatever that means to you)
  • Laugh as much as you can
  • Sleep a good 8 hours a night
  • Drink water
  • Don't smoke

These aren't new ideas, but like Margaret Thatcher once said, "Of course, it’s the same old story. Truth usually is the same old story."
