There are a whole host of common skincare mistakes, so I have listed a few of my top ones:

  • Not removing make-up. It is best to take all your make-up off first with a make-up remover before cleansing your face. If you don’t, then the cleanser is only removing the make-up and your skin is not getting cleansed!
  • Not treating your hair. Having hair in really good condition can definitely boost your morale, so give your hair a really good treat.
  • Not drinking enough water. Approximately two-thirds of our body weight is water. We lose an amount of this during the day; therefore, it is essential to drink at least six to eight glasses of water each day. This is especially important for the hydration of the skin and aids in keeping the skin soft and supple, giving it a youthful look.

The most common mistake I have observed in personal skin care is either not enough care or over treating the skin.

  • If the skin is not being properly cleansed and exfoliated, it may become congested and dull.
  • If the skin is being over treated, you’ll notice mild inflammation and extreme conditions, such as excessive oil production or dryness.

The best way to approach a skincare routine is with simplicity and an awareness of what your skin is telling you it needs.

Simple. I see these mistakes every day: overexposure to sun, pollutants, stress, and terrible diet. These are simple changes that each and every one of us can make in our lives.

The most common mistake people make with their skincare is that they don’t clean their face at bedtime! Cleansing at the end of the day makes all the difference.

  • Strangely enough, many people don't have a good skin care program. I wish all my patients would start a good skin care program appropriate for their skin type and stick to it!
  • One of the biggest challenges I encounter in my practice are patients who cannot resist the temptation to not pick at their face.
  • Also, I encourage my patients to resist buying skin care products without understanding the ingredients or because they enjoy the smell of the product.

Washing their face with soap, buying cheap cleanser, toner, and hydratation products. Buying profesional products will last much longer and the results are way better.

The most common mistake people make is not knowing their skin, not being able to recognize what it is telling them.

Many people think they are oily and they are not, usually it is a dehydration issue. Or mature skin, how to rejuvenate the cells without over stimulating and causing redness and thinning the tissue.

  • They select products that take their skin more out of balance.
  • Part of a facial is the education you should receive from your skin care guide (esthetician) who teaches you about your skin by performing a skin analysis both at the beginning of the facial and at the end, teaching you the strengths and weaknesses of your skin and what products and treatments would be best for you.
  • Learning the signs of early detection of dehydration, sensitivity, lymphatic sluggishness, environmental stresses, and then knowing what to do with treatment products that are correctly matched to your skin will help you to keep that healthy natural glow.

Using a heavy cream at night is an absolute no-no! Heavy night creams block your pores and end up mostly on your pillow anyway.

The skin regenerates during sleep, and needs to be free to ‘breathe’ and turnover at night. A gentle cleansing and a light regenerative serum is all you need. Less is more!

Two common mistakes observed in people’s personal skin care are: Over-washing the face and not using the proper moisturizer.

  • People with acne tend to over-wash their face thinking it will aid the recovery of their acne
    • Over-washing is damaging to the skin because it:
      • Irritates the skin
      • Strips the natural oils off the skin
      • Dries the skin out

Repetitive washing does not get to the root of acne. Acne is caused by bacterial growth in skin coupled with sebaceous secretions. People with acne and/or oily skin need a moisturizer as well.

  •  Adults often do not use the proper moisturizer for their type of skin
    • Department store moisturizers have inactive components of oils or waxes that fill in little cracks, much like the idea of spackle; the skin looks smoother, but it's actually spackled smooth
    • Prescribed moisturizers have hyaluronic acid and other humectants which soak into the skin and then draw moisture into the dermis so that it hydrates and plumps up the skin.
      • The Epionce Line has customized products for dry/mature skin, normal/combination skin, and acne prone skin. The line includes cleansers, toners, and creams.
