Question

How can I get rid of dandruff?

Head and Shoulders stopped working for dandruff control?  Do I need medication for dandruff, diet change, scrubbing harder?

First, if your hair is color-treated, check with your colorist to see if they can recommend a color-safe anti-dandruff product.

One such product that I LOVE, is the Tricologia Scalp Cleanser by MAURO. It safely removes dead skin build-up from the scalp, as well as product residue on the hair strand from sprays, gels, and mousses. It is available at online or 1-800-42MAURO.

The next line of defense is over-the-counter products available at your local drugstore or grocery store.
There are five different categories of these types of products available:

  • Zinc Pyrithione Shampoos - Head and Shoulders, Selsun Salon
  • Tar Based Shampoos - Neutrogena T/Gel
  • Salicylic Acid Shampoos - Lonil T Selenium
  • Sulfide Shampoos - Selsun Blue
  • Ketoconazole Shampoos - Nizoral

While one of these products may work temporarily, it may be necessary to alternate between two or three of these products to stay on top of tough scalp conditions. You may also need to condition your hair more often, as some of these products can be very drying. If this category of products doesn’t work for you, then you’ll need to see a dermatologist for a prescription shampoo that is specific to your scalp's diagnosed condition.
