DO

  • Do tell your stylist that you’re considering making a change when you book your next appointment, extra time may be needed to achieve your new look.
  • Do bring photos; a picture is worth a thousand words.
  • Do be willing to see yourself differently.
  • Do be willing to listen to your stylist suggestions, even if you choose not to do it.
  • Do be willing to share previous hair experiences that did or did not work for you.
  • Do be willing to ask questions if you’re not clear on what your stylist is suggesting, or how it will affect your hair.
  • Do call if you’re running more then a few minutes late, and be understanding if rescheduling is necessary. Ultimately, you’ll benefit by giving your stylist the proper time they need for your hair.
  • Do ask for your color formula if you’re moving out of town. There’s no guarantee that your colorist will give it to you, but if so, it may save a lot of headaches with your new colorist. In fact, some major color manufacterers have a referral service to help clients who use their color product find salons in new towns.

DON’T

  • Don’t run your hands through your hair while it’s being cut or colored, it messes up the sectioning and can throw your stylist off.
  • Don’t run your hands through your hair while it’s being blow-dried. Again, you may mess up the
sectioning, causing your blow-dry to take more time.
  • Don’t turn your head to the side after every snip to look in the mirror. Haircutters are taught
to work square with the mirror, and turning your head sideways can cause one side to end up shorter than the other, or an angle they’re trying to achieve, may be destroyed.
  • Don’t cross your legs during your haircut, it causes your head to tilt to one side and you may end up with one side shorter than the other.
  • Don’t let your children run wild in the salon or spread out toys in major walkways. The distraction may prevent your stylist from doing their best work, and may also force the stylist or salon owner to attempt to discipline the children for the comfort and safety of the other clients in the salon. This is a no-win situation for everyone.

How to get the most from your hairdresser:

  1. Don’t be late for your hairdresser
  2. Don’t wear a roll neck jumper
  3. Be realistic if you only want to take ½ inch off your hair – it’s not going to be radically different
  4. If you want a restyle – have a consultation prior to the appointment

Dream Clients...

  1. Are realistic about their hair
  2. Can explain what they want; beware of using technical terms unless you really know what they mean!
  3. Are always on time and friendly

If you are unhappy with the cut or colour...
Calmly explain to the stylist what is wrong; ask for the manager who will deal with your concerns.

If you are considering having the chop, questions to ask first are:

  1. Will it suit my hair type?
  2. Will it suit my face shape?
  3. How long will it take to style?

Worst thing to say: “I would rather go to the dentist than the hairdresser.”
