Hello, I am due to have surgery (Tummy Tuck, Liposuction and Fat Transfer) in March of 2015. I am currently on Depo (Birth Control Shot) and soon to be off of it in December 2014. I wanted to know would there be any side effects to the birth control and surgery. And if so, how long should I wait until I schedule my surgery.
Answer: Depo-provera and mommy make over Dear madam, Depo provera like any birth control medication are associated with increase incidence of blood clots, though in my plastic surgery practice of over 27 years it is extremely rare ( may have happened once ). The way to reduce the likelihood of blood clots is to ambulate often after surgery and drink plenty of fluids. During surgery an ICD ( intermitent compression device ) use , also reduces the chance of blood clots and is part of the requirements for accreditation of surgery center. So, in my practice, I allow my patients to use birth control medication, because, in my opinion, getting pregnant is riskier for surgery and most every surgeon will cancel surgery if pregnancy occures. Always, consult with board certified plastic surgeons who operate in accredited surgery center for your safety. Most importantly, check the before and after pictures to make sure that they are numerous, consistent and attractive. Best of luck, Dr Widder

Answer: Birth control and plastic surgery There should be no contraindication of birth control with cosmetic surgery. The only issue I see is whether, after going off the Depo, you will be compliant with an alternative birth control regimen around the time of your surgery.

Answer: Being on Depo will not have a direct effect on your surgery... Being on Depo will not have a direct effect on your surgery. Unlike the birth control pills which increase the risk for blood clotting, Depo is safe to use.The only problem you might have is its side effect, which is weight gain. Most surgeons will have an issue about that, so do consult your plastic surgeon if he would advise that you attain your ideal weight before surgery.
