What is serial excision?

A normal excision requires a football shaped tissue removal that is 2.5 to 3 times as long as the width of whatever tissue is being removed. This can create a very long scar, especially on the face. Serial excision is typically 2-3 procedures during which part of the width of the scar or lesion is removed each time. This results in a scar that is much shorter but still enables complete removal of whatever the tissue is that must be removed. Make sure that your chosen surgeon is very experienced in the technique.
