I have gained a lot of weight after having a baby 11 months ago and don't feel good about myself when I look in the mirror. I was considering getting a Tummy Tuck, but I would like to have another baby in about 4 years! So, if I get a tummy tuck, could I still have a baby? Here is a picture; based on this, am I a candidate for the procedure?

Not yet but someday

You really should be done having children before the tummy tuck so you don't stretch it out by having another child later.  Plus, you should lose the excess weight before surgery to get your very best result.  So, someday it can be a great way to get a nice flat tummy!

Postpone Tummy Tuck until DONE having Children

I do NOT think you should be seriously thinking about having a tummy tuck at this time for 2 major reasons; 1. You are NOT done having children. It is best to delay your operation until you complete your family and a subsequent pregnancy would not disrupt the flat tummy produced by your surgeon. 2. You are overweight. The best results are seen in women with BMI's below 30. Once you reduced your weight into that range your tummy tuck result will be MUCH better and the rate of complications... more

Tummy Tuck after pregnancies

Best wishes to a fellow Odessan (I went to high school at Permian). From your pictures it appears you would be a candidate for a tummy tuck. You have a lot of loose skin and multiple striae, many of which would be removed by the operation. To get the best result from the surgery, you need to be at a stable weight. That is not necessarily your optimal weight, but where you stabilize after best efforts at reaching your pre-pregnancy plateau. A tummy tuck will not interfere with future... more

You are not a candidate today, but

The most important thing you mentioned was that you are still planning on having another child. You should be done having children prior to undergoing a tummy tuck. Also, you have to be at a stable weight and at least 6mo from delivering a baby before even considering a tummy tuck. So in about 4yrs after having your last child, consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your options and how diet and exercise can get you ready for the surgery. From your photo it appears that... more

You are not a candidate = yet.

Tummy tucks are there to remove extra skin. You have a few extra pounds on board and would do best first - have all of your children. Second - loose the weight. You should be at your ideal weight. Then have a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon. We are not there to make you skinny --- diet and exercise do that. We help you to get rid of extra skin and tighten the abdominal muscles.

Ideal conditions for tummy tuck patients

First, ask yourself how fit you are. The ideal candidate has a good exercise routine, reasonable activity level, lack of poor habits like smoking or drinking excessively, and is able to maintain a healthy diet. You appear to be over-weight or at least able to improve on your lifestyle. The closer you are to an ideal lifestyle, the more accurate and predictable the surgery and the safer your procedure and recovery. Although some patients reset their weight and metabolism following pregnancy... more

Wait till after next baby and lose weight before abdominoplasty

A tummy tuck will not give you a good result at present. There is excess fat beneath the skin in the flank and waist area. If you have surgery now and then have another baby, it would likely ruin the results of your surgery. My sincere recommendation would be to work hard with diet and exercise to lose as much weight as you can, have your second baby and then consider body contouring surgery. You will have a much better result after weight loss. You will likely need a full abdominoplasty... more
