What is the Best Surgical Option for Unmarried, 20 Yr Old with BMI of 39?

I am 20 yr old unmarried female with issue of obesity all my life. I have tried every possible non surgical option one can think of including dieting, exercise, Ayurvedic, homeopathic alternative with no success. I have been obese all my life with genetic predisposition since both my parents and sister are obese but nothing like me! Rest assured, we all are in healthcare industry and are very good with diet and exercise. I am TIRED now and need surgical option- what is best option for me?

Hi there,

My name is Kirsty and I'm a community manager here at RealSelf. I'm also in the process of having a Gastric Bypass myself.

Please note that I am not a doctor. However, from everything I have read and been told, Gastric Bypass is usually perfomed on patients who have a BMI of 40+, which would put them in the "morbidly obese" category. With a BMI of 39 you are classed as "obese".

However, doctors do consider patients for Gastric bypass surgery with a BVMI of 35+ if they have some co-morbidities, such as: type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea, etc.

We have some guides that you may find useful in helping you look into the different options available as well as a Weight Loss Surgery page, with other tools, such as a BMI calculator, that you may find useful. You can find those tools here: http://www.realself.com/weight-loss-surgery/info
