Hi there,
My name is Kirsty and I'm a community manager here at RealSelf. I'm also in the process of having a Gastric Bypass myself.
Please note that I am not a doctor. However, from everything I have read and been told, Gastric Bypass is usually perfomed on patients who have a BMI of 40+, which would put them in the "morbidly obese" category. With a BMI of 39 you are classed as "obese".
However, doctors do consider patients for Gastric bypass surgery with a BVMI of 35+ if they have some co-morbidities, such as: type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea, etc.
We have some guides that you may find useful in helping you look into the different options available as well as a Weight Loss Surgery page, with other tools, such as a BMI calculator, that you may find useful. You can find those tools here: http://www.realself.com/weight-loss-surgery/info
