Teeth Whitening Over the Counter Products?

Nowadays it seems like there's an entire aisle at the grocery store devoted to tooth whitening products. Although many of them carry the ADA stamp of approval showing they are generally safe for your teeth, they are less effective than in-office whitening and when undertaken without the supervision of a dentist they can have negative results.

As people have become aware that stained teeth make you look older, less healthy, and less attractive, there has been significant growth in teeth whitening treatments. Options for at-home whitening include:

·         Whitening mouth wash

·         Whitening toothpaste

·         Paint-on whiteners

·         Whitening strips

·         Whitening trays

Some of these can provide good results for minor staining when used according to their instructions. When selecting any type of at-home tooth whitening, remember to look for the ADA seal of approval, which means that if you use the product strictly according to instructions, it should be safe for your teeth. We always do an evaluation for patients at no cost to costumize the best option for them, treatments vary with the patient's need and teeth condition.

I find the Crest Supreme White-Strips (highest strength available) to be the most effective, although nowhere near as bright as an in-office treatment such as ZOOM.

Over the counter Teeth Whitening

When you ask about over the counter teeth whitening products I am assuming you are asking due to the cost of whitening at the dental office?!? There are a few at the drug stores such as Crest White Strips. I must say though, the strength of the bleaching material is very low and not prescription strength. With that being said, they will brighten your teeth, but it will take a good amount of time for it to work.  When you start adding up costs, by the time you get to where you want with the bleaching, it could take several months and buying several boxes of Crest White Stripsequal the  take-home bleach by your dentist,.  So the cost will be about the same overall but the time to use the dental office bleach will be about 10-14 days versus several months.  When looking at these products you should look at every aspect and not just the cost.  Because over time, the cost of the crest white strips begins to over shadow the dental office bleach if you do touch-ups in a year or two.  Remember, most of the cost of the dental office bleach is in fabricating the bleach trays.  After you do a bleaching cycel, keep the trays so al you will need to do is to buy only the bleach tubes which are far cheaper.  The bleach can be kept for up to 2 years if kept in the refrigerator.  Write the date on the tube!!!
