Why Do Surgeons Always Say There is No Other Option Other Than Surgery?

Any time I try to do research on some kind of alternative treatment, some MD or surgeon has to put the kibosh on it out of hand. FDA approved, has to fit into my little box of understanding, you should get a pharmaceutical or surgical option because that is all we know and the only way we can get paid. So what, nothing works unless it fits within traditional western medicine? If so, please explain the physiological mechanism of the placebo effect.
