Is a slightly runny nose normal after rhinoplasty?

I had a rhinoplasty two years ago and since then my nose has been runnier than it was before. It's not dripping, just running more, I need tissues more now and I sniff a lot now. I didn't think it was any big deal but I've read some things that it isn't normal. What do you think? Thanks

Hi Rain11,

Your symptoms are more likely due to allergic rhinitis or hay fever and is not in any way related to your rhinoplasty 2 years ago, though the symptoms commenced following the surgery. Antihistamine or steroid nasal spray are effective for temporary relief. Regular exercise, avoiding smoking, avoiding exposure to allergens, immunotherapy, and lately, laser treatments are effective measures to avoid and halt the symptoms. In my experience, a 1-time treatment with laser gives a long lasting result.

Your sinuses drain through your nose. As a result of your rhinoplasty, your nasal passageways are open and your sinuses are draining appropriately through your nose.

A OTC decongestant may decrease sinus secretions. Consult your surgeon.
