Skin Sparing Mastectomy and Inframammary Fold Question?

Is the inframammary fold normally removed during skin sparing mastectomy with immediate flap reconstruction?

For best looking results, the inframammary fold should not be disrupted at the time of skin sparing mastectomy.

Thank you for you question.

For best looking results, the inframammary fold should not be disrupted at the time of skin sparing mastectomy.

If the inframammary fold is violated or removed at the time of mastectomy, a board-certified plastic surgeon can attempt to reconstruct it for you, but it is usually not as good as the one that you have.

I hope this helps.

If you are a candidate for the skin sparing mastectomy( ask your surgeon about nipple sparing mastectomy for better results if you are a candidate), Your surgeon should preserve the inframammary fold.

Inframammary Fold

The inframammary fold should not be violated/removed during a skin sparing mastectomy.  If your breast surgeon does indeed violate this fold, then your plastic surgeon can try to restore this fold during your reconstructive surgery.  Hope this helps.

It is very uncommon for a skilled breast surgeon to violate the inframammary fold.   If this does occur, your plastic surgeon can often repair this during the immediate reconstruction.

I wish you a safe and healthy recovery!!!

If at all possible, the fold should be preserved.  But the primary goal here is to treat your disease.  If you are having expanders placed, you have a second chance to see how your fold will turn out.  If you are doing an immediate reconstruction with placement of implants, the fold will have to be addressed at that surgery.  You are encouraged to discuss your concerns with your plastic surgeon.

Sometimes the inframammary skin is removed during a  mastectomy to accommodate a flap and hide the scar better.

Depending on where the cancer in the breast was, and the proximityof the cancer to the infra-amage to key areas in the infra-mammary line.

That is why i make sure I am present with the breast surgeon when doing the mastectomy to avoid damage to key areas of the breast. There are key land marks that has to be preserved. If the cancer is very close to the inra-mammary line, and the infra-mammary line has to be lost, then it needs to be reconstructed at the time of breast reconstruction by intrnal sutures or a modified ryan Flap then proceed with the reconstruction.
