When Should I See the Doctor for a Seroma?

I had my tummy tuck on Dec. 3, 2008 and recovery has been non-eventful. However, on Dec. 19 I noticed the characteristic fluid wave and went back to the plastic surgeon on Dec. 22 to have it aspirated. He got out 90cc. He had me return on Dec. 24 and attempted aspiration in two different locations that failed to produce any measureable fluid.

So, we have the holidays and the plastic surgeon has gone out of state for his vacation. It is now Dec. 29th, and I just noticed the fluid wave again. My question is, will it hurt to wait until my next appt. on Jan. 5 to have the seroma aspirated again?

I will be wearing my binder faithfully day and night for compression but will be going on vacation this week on a trip that has been planned for a year. Would diuretics help at all? I sure hate to be so far away from home and not able to get relief if needed.

How long can I wait without doing any harm before having the seroma looked at again? Is it harmful to wait a week to 10 days when you notice a seroma that persists?

In worst case scenario it can lead to the formation of thick scar tissue called a bursa which can be unsightly or uncomfortable and in some cases require removal. I would recommend you see your Dr. as soon as possible. Sometimes it is possible to aspirate these seromas under guided ultrasound if... more
