Hello doctors, I'm wondering to what extent, a person's tissues quality - cartilage + bones affect the results of a rhinoplasty? Can an experienced surgeon predict the results of a rhinoplasty most of the times? or, sometimes the healing process is severely affected by the person's tissues quality and tendency to overproduce scar tissues, and thereby, harm the results ? Many thanks

Predictability of rhinoplasty results

Yes, an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon can usually predict the results of a rhinoplasty most of the time. The patient’s own cartilage, bones, and nasal soft tissue are all significant in how the nose will heal. Overproduction of scar tissue can occur in rare instances with olive oily thick skin. However, this is addressed with Blenderm tape and cortisone shots.

Yes, experienced Rhinoplasty surgeons have a good idea who will and won't get a good result from Rhinoplasty

Yes, Rhinoplasty surgeons, with a great deal of experience (10 + years IMHO), can tell which patients will and will not get a good Rhinoplasty result. This depends on the thickness of the skin, how oily the skin is, how thick the sucutaneous nasal tissues are as well as the basic strength, shape and structure of the nasal skeleton (cartilage and bone). IMHO, the more Rhinoplasty surgeries, the surgeon does, the better he/she gets. No reputable Rhinoplasty... more

Rhinoplasty predictability of outcome

The posed question about Predictability of rhinoplasty results is dependent on several divergent factors such as patient tissue , prior history of trauma or surgery, underlying anatomy, age of patient, and none the less the surgeons experience and style. An experienced qualified rhinoplasty surgeon should achieve 90% predictability with virgin (none operated) noses and perhaps 70% with revision surgery depending on nature of prior problem. In my practice I give the patient a print of... more

Tissues

All the things you mention are involved in the analysis of the nose and in the choice of techniques used to achieve the desired result in order to try and control the outcome as much as possible. Skin thickness, quality, cartilage shape and strength, previous injury, scar tissue, smoking and general health. Even with taking all this into account there is still the element of healing which cannot be completely controlled. this variable can result in asymmetries, blunted shape or persistent... more

Tissue quality in evaluation of Rhinoplasty

Yes, one can easily evaluate weather somone will be a good candidate or bad candidate for rhinoplasty. Some things your surgeon should/has considered is the thinkness of your skin, how sebaceous (sweat glands) your skin is, your skin tone, the strength of the cartilages underneath your skin.

Experience and ability to predict rhinoplasty results

The more experience your surgeon has the beter off you are. Rhinoplasty results depend on what you brought to the table, how experienced your surgeon is and the never completely predictible healing course. This why rhinoplasy is the most challenging plastic surgery operation.

Rhinoplasty Results - Predictablility

Surgery, like medicine, is not an exact science (like physics or engineering). However, plastic surgeons are generally very particular about their craft because they want to control as many variables that they can. In the end, there are some patients who do not heal as well as others, for reasons which we may never know or be able to predict. The good news is that these patients are rare. Even if you have had bad scarring in the past in other areas of your body, this is not a reliable... more
