I have been getting lip injections with Restylane for three years. The corners of my mouth are thin and I resemble the Joker when I smile. Have the corners actually atrophied because too much was placed in the middle? Do I have to wait till all of the remaining dissolves before I can start again?

Some injectors ignore the outer corners of the lips and the depressor anguli oris areas that support the outer corners of the lips. This is very unfortunate. Lips that are only treated centrally, resemble a beak not a mouth. Treatment of the outer corners and the area immediately below the outer corners, address precisely what you are describing. Restylane Lip Injections and the Corners of the Mouth

No this cannot happen. You need to see a more experienced injector who can modify the corners of your lips to give you the look you want.

Can Restylane Lip Injections Cause the Corner Lip Muscles to Atrophy over Time?

No, there would be no mechanism by which Restylane injections, to the lips, would casue lip muscle atrophy without other serious complications like open sores, infections and disrupted blood supply from vessel occlusion that would not be subtle.

Restylane will not affect lip muscles

Restylane will not cause lip muscles to atrophy. What you are describing is due to injection technique alone. You do not have to wait to have the area adjusted. Please remember, your results depend upon the skill and experience of your physician injector. see video

Corner of the mouth

You are describing the aging process. Restylane does not cause muscle atrophy. aging is the cause.

Changes to corners of mouth

Pictures would help answer this question. It is unlikely that the amount of filler or thevtechnique used in injecting could cause this. Correction could include surgery of the corners of the mouth. From what you describe, the reverse of a corner lip lift operation (a minor procedure) would permanently pull the corners of the mouth down. However it might give you a sad look when you are not smiling.

Restylane Corners of the Mouth Injections Do NOT cause the Muscles to Atrophy over Time

There is NO evidence that filling the triangular hollows at the corner of the mouth with a filler results in muscle wasting. As a matter of fact it is the sagging of the face combined with the muscles which pull the corners of the mouth inferiorly which create the down turned "sad" triangular hollows. The area can be greatly enhanced with a combination of fillers to both fill the deep and superficial voids as well as weakening the DAO muscle to stop the muscular creation of... more
