In men, anabolic steroid use can cause enlargement of the breasts. Some of the testosterone gets converted to estroge, which causes breast growth. Men undergoing hormone replacement therapy with a doctor will often be given an estrogen blocker to prevent this. If the nipples, or the entire breasts are enlarged from steroid use, surgical reduction may be required to remove the "lumps" (enlarged glandular tissue). Sometimes the nipple itself may need to be reduced. This type of surgery can often be done under local anesthesia. If lumps are removed, they should be sent to pathlogy for testing to make sure they are not cancerous.
