I have had 4 Umbilical Hernias; each of the first 3 failed and in all 4, the surgeon used an Alloderm patch. My understanding is that a "larger" patch was used in each subsequent surgery. All of these surgeries have been through the same incision with some scar tissue being removed at each time. I'm told by a Dr. friend that the next time will be for an incision through the side of the abdomen and with a much larger patch being inserted. Is this the normal course for this type of repair?
