Can pressing down on bridge after osteotomy cause more swelling?

January 5, 2014

I had an osteotomy and minor tip plasty 11 days ago to remove a large hump and slightly elevate my tip with cartilage from my own nose. When the cast came off my profile looked pretty straight, though of course my nose was swollen a lot. A couple days ago during checkup the doctor mentioned that if I wanted to (not mandatory) I could press down on the top bridge and sides of my nose a few times a day to further straighten the nose and mold it during these first few weeks while the nose "settles." A day after I started doing this my nose seems to be swelling even more, and the bridge has formed another bump like what I had before surgery! Thankfully the bump is not hard and is malleable, so if I press as the doctor instructed it does go down, which leads me to believe it's just swelling. (Though the bump wasn't there at all the first few days before I started doing these exercises). I'm wondering why the swelling in the bridge started immediately after I began doing these massage/press exercises on the bridge. Does anyone have any experience with swelling after pressing down on their nose? Or could it be something else? I just don't want to mess something up permanently...
